Cornell 57 2/3, Dartmouth 55 1/3: The Green runners, jumpers, and throwers were edged out by Cornell by a narrow margin in the first of two indoor dual meets, one held before and the other after the indoor intercollegiates. In the first event, the Green went into an early lead in the Cornell field house, when Jim Burnham copped a first place in the 35pound weight throw. Big Bill Kimball propelled his elongated frame over both the high and low hurdles to win these events handily, while Ken Coyne was another double winner with first places in the quarter and the half-mile runs. Les Kliest, one of the most dependable of the field performers for the Green, won the broad jump and tied for second in the high jump. Stan Waterman won a resounding triumph in the two mile. With several of his key operatives currently handicapped by illness, injuries, or scholastic difficulties, Coach Noyes should see his charges give an even more impressive account of themselves outdoors.
Indoor Intercollegiates: Taking a small team (of only six men) to the 27th annual IC4A Indoor Track Carnival, Coach Noyes watched his charges finish far down in team scoring with a meager 4 points. Ken Coyne came in a neat third in the 600-yard run, while Les Kleist took a fifth in the broad jump to account for all the Green tallies.
Dartmouth 561/2, Yale 56 1/2: In the final encounter of the indoor season, the Dartmouth track team came out of a dual meet with Yale with the somewhat implausible tie score of each. The complete dearth of Green entries in the pole vault enabled Yale to sweep that event and then win the final mile relay to tie up the meet. Les Kleist came through with a winning broad jump of 22 feet 2 1/4 inches, breaking the Yale cage record. Stan Waterman was the only double winner for the Green, with firsts in the mile and the twomile, which is an exacting assignment if I ever saw one. Each team took six first places and, if Coach Noyes could have scared up someone to make with the pole, the Green would have been in.
