The class members in and around New York will have had their class dinner by the time you fellows read my column. I didn't get the word on it until after they had gone to press on the April issue, so I couldn't get it in in time. Anyhow, I hope it was very successful, and I'm very hopeful that other cities will follow step. I'm trying to help Jim Olsen get organized out his way so the Chicago boys can have a get-together. Sometime this spring all the Boston boys will gather, too, I promise!
The New York meeting was held April 22, 6 P.M., at the Dartmouth Club. I'm awfully sorry I didn't get it in the column, Bill, but I have to know a month ahead of time in order to meet my deadline of the 10th. Bill Remsen,Chuck Feeny and "Damp" Dampier ran the show.
Bill reports that he's joined the Organized Submarine Reserve and sees Howie Geer there every Thursday night. Howie is working in Long Island City in a machine tool outfit.
We had a successful performance given by the Glee Club last week in Belmont—quite a turnout! Don Cobleigh was there in all his glory. He is leaving Hanover before long to head for sunny California—maybe even Hollywood.
Had a nice letter from Don Clark. Don is happily settled in a barracks apartment for married Vets attending Pratt Institute where he is studying advertising design. He. has a son Jonathan French Clark, born this' past February nth. Don's address is apartment 2-B, 200 Ryerson Street, Brooklyn 5, New York. He'd like to see or hear from any of the boys in that neck of the woods.
I'm afraid my reporters have been pretty lax this month. I really don't have much news to pass on. George Barlo-iu finally came through, however. He's at Rutger's Law School pursuing his studies "with customary vigor" as he puts it. His area is pretty barren of '43s, but he had seen Walt Daggett. JimO'Mara, '42, and Dave Allen, '42.
"Bad" Armstrong writes the following from Birmingham, Alabama:
I guess I told you that I married a girl from this part of the country. After I got back from overseas and after the war was over, we came down here to live. It's lovely country and the people are really fine, but the Dartmouth clan is a very rare species. The nearest Alumni Club is Atlanta, several hundred miles away. Saw Doc Preece last summer in New York and Jim Heenahan several times in Osaka, Japan, in the winter of last year.
Bud was inquiring about Frank Knoop, JitnDewey, and Bus Benner '44. Sorry, I don't have Bus' address, but Jim Dewey's is 5555 Sheridan Road, Chicago, 111., and Frank's is 1023 Michigan Ave., Evanston, 111. That's a good idea about the address lists, I tried to get some made but the College felt it too much work. I'll get at the list soon myself.
First Lieutenant Hugh Lena writes of his recent engagement. The lucky gal is Miss Jeanne Bennett of Flint, Mich. Hugh is a Medical Officer stationed at Lowry Field in Denver. He reports having seen Orm Birkland, Bill Temple, Jack Mack, H. F. Jones and Wally Olin. Thanks for the note, Hugh.
My reporter from the Vermont area—DickWood writes from Northfield, Vt., where he is getting some experience in the textile game. He'll be back at Lebanon next fall. Says there isn't any news for the present, but he'll keep me posted.
I'll be in Hanover the weekend of May 16 to 18—that's the time of the Class Officers meeting. We will be starting the ball rolling for the reunions in '4B. You fellows better start planning on that. I'll pass on all the information as I get it.
Nice letter from Ted Hopper, how about sending some news next time though, Ted? Hank Hartmann writes from Hanover that he expects to be married some time in August just before he goes to Law School. WarrenPreece, whose engagement I announced a while ago, also sent a nice letter. His fiancee, Miss Deborah Weeks, is a grand-daughter of the late Harry Bates Thayer (Thayer Hall) a Trustee of Dartmouth for many years. The wedding bells are to ring July 12. Warren is working for his M.A. at Columbia, in English. Speaking of English, I had a card from LewEnglish. He's with the Associated Factory Mutuals breaking in as an insurance appraiser.
Received a birth announcement from Bradand "Buffie" Copeland. Margaret Ann was born February 9 and weighs 6 pounds 1434 ounces. Brad finished his interneship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania last June and is now stationed at Coatesville Veterans' Hospital in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
Had a letter from the Empire State Building —Johnny Odeneal, but I can't get these fellows to tell much news, even about themselves. He was inquiring about Graham Conkling. Hope you two fellows got together O.K.
Nelson McClary's Dad wrote to me again and passed on more interesting news. If any of you fellows have a chance to write him, he'd love to get news. His address is as follows:
Nelson C. McClary, Ronne Antarctic Aeronautical Communication Station, Civil Aeronautics Administration, New Orleans Airport, New Orleans 17, Louisiana. You see, these messages are radioed to him.
The Dartmouth-Yale hockey game for the National Collegiate playoffs brought out quite a bunch of the boys last month. I saw fellows there I hadn't seen in a dog's age. "Jug" O'Connor put in his initial appearance since coming back to these parts.
Bill Maeck recently assumed the additional posts of Business Manager of the Alumni Magazine and Executive Secretary of the Dartmouth Treasurers' Association. Other news from Hanover is that Rollie Higgins was elected Captain of the Big Green swimming team, and they've had a whale of a season. Congratulations Rollie!
"Damp" Dam pier sent a nice long letter a while back. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Dartmouth Club of New York representing our class, and I sent him a list of all our classmates in the New York area so you fellows should be getting together quite often. If there is anyone that hasn't been contacted then get in touch with "Damp" at the Club in New York on 37 East 39th Street. He passed on the following news: "Tom Munn is being married to Marie Wilson on April 10 (that's a has-been by the time you read this). He's a field representative for some insurance company. MikeDiaz has become a father of a beautiful little girl. (Did you say little—Mike's daughter?) He is working with the Garcia-Diaz Lines. Art Clement is working for the Columbia Broadcasting System. I see Emil Mosbacher occasionally. He is working for his Father's company and has become quite the man about town. 'Damp' wants Joe Crowley to drop him a line sometime, and sends his best to all." Thanks for the letter—sounds like you're doing a swell job down there "Damp." It's activities like that that will make us a strong class, put us up in the Alumni Fund drive and help make our Reunions a success.
I was checking over some notes the other day and found something you might be interested to recall—our class officers: The Executive Committee consists of Harry Gerber, George Monroe, Jim Olsen, Bill Remsen, Stan Skaug and myself. Bill Maeck is treasurer, Johnny Koslowski is class agent, and I'm doubling as secretary. At our Reunion in '4B we'll elect a whole new set of officers —keep that in mind.
I received an exceptionally interesting letter and article from Mr. George McClary, 1913, father of Lt. Nelson McClary USNR of our class. Nelson recently sailed as first mate on the Ronne Antartic Research Expedition which left Beaumont, Texas, on January 25. The expedition, headed by Commander Ronne who was second in command to Admiral Byrd in 1939-41 expedition, has a personnel of 22 men and will spend a year at Palmer Peninsula, which lies just south of Cape Horn in the Anartica. What Ronne intends to do is to attempt to determine whether or not Antartica is one land mass or two. He is using planes and dog teams in his work. By sonic sounding, exploding charges on the surface of ice and registering their responses, which will vary according to whether they strike rock or water, it is hoped that the supposed channel between the large mass may be discovered—Let's hear more about it Nelson!
Jim O.lseri is a very busy body out in Chicago. He's doing a wonderful job of getting the class organized out there. Let's get some of the other big cities to follow New York, Chicago and Boston. Jim tells me that he ran into Frank Knoop selling dictaphones in the Merchandise Mart. He works for Dictaphone Inc., of New York, as a salesman, covering Chicago. I'm sending Jim a list of names of classmates in the Chicago area so he can get things organized and with the help of Jim Dewey and any other volunteers we ought to get Chicago pretty well organized. Anyone interested in helping can call or write Jim at 607 North Edgewood Drive, LaGrange Park, Illinois. Call him, too, if you want to be sure to be notified about any pending get-togethers.
That about clears things up for another month. You fellows are starting to slip on news. I've got a few old Faithfuls, but not enough variety from all over the country—the world, for that matter. Let's have some pictures, too— this spring weather is perfect for taking pictures.
