DARTMOUTH ALUMNI gathered here Friday night, March 28th, for their 1947 Annual Banquet, approximately 100 Northwesterners appearing at the Radisson Hotel, Minneapolis, for cocktails and dinner arranged by Tom Oakes '41.
The program opened with a welcome by President Wood Foster '33 and introduction of those at the speaker's table, including Luther Oakes '99 member Board of Overseers, Thayer School; Alumni Counselor Art Dunning '11; and Stan Skaug '43 representing Shattuck School, Faribault, Minnesota.
It next moved rapidly thru the election of officers to a report on the growing Vaughn Memorial and the activities of our very active Freshmen Interviewing Committee by Chairman John Faegre Jr. '33. The state of the treasury, also came in for comment by LymanWakefield Jr. '33.
Art Dunning then introduced our guest of honor and speaker, Herbert Faulkner West, Dartmouth '22, Professor of Comparative Literature, book collector, critic, and Associate Editor of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
Herb delivered a message as stimulating and thought provoking as some of his own courses .... a plea for efficiency and flexibility in teaching and an urge for closer faculty relationships with the stftdent body that their changing needs in a changing world may be better met. He expressed deep confidence that President Dickey is moving in this direction, paid tribute to the high calibre of the present student body, and ended on the note "Dartmouth is wonderful, but Dartmouth can be a lot better." The meeting closed with songs and projection of the colorful sound motion picture "Green Flashback," provided by Dartmouth Films.
It was nice to see "out-of-towners"—Dick Morin of Albert Lea, Dud Russell, L. J. Cone and Charles Bailey of Duluth, Jim McConnon of Winona, Colin Holman and Dick Storrs of Rochester, Bob Crabb of Le Suer and Roger Pettee of Rice Lake, Wise.
