The officers of the Boston Alumni Association, under the direction of President CharlesBartlett 27, have planned an event for every month throughout the year. Activities have been varied both as to type and locale, so as to give as many alumni as possible a chance to participate.... to attend the functions they like most at places they can get to easily. Suburban Dartmouth Clubs have also played a large part in the success of these events by acting as co-sponsors and doing a great deal of the organizing. Wilfred Smart '07 and his secretary in the D.A.A. Office at 44 School St., have helped considerably. In short, many people have spent a great deal of time and effort to plan and carry through these activities YOU asked for.... you can do your part by paying your annual D.A.A. of Boston dues promptly when you are solicited in the fall.

Here's a review of the summer activities:

June was the Alumni Hum, held at Noble and Greenough School, Dedham, on June 5. It was an affair for the entire family .... and included a "bring your own" picnic supper at 5:00 P.M. followed by group singing, plus entertainment and music supplied by the Boston Alumni Glee Club and Orchestra. Every attempt was made to simulate the Hanover springtime hums. Over 200 attended the Hum, in spite of the fact that it had been raining hard all day long. The 200 loyal optimists were well rewarded, for the sun broke through and the spacious grounds of Noble and Greenough provided an ideal setting for the evening of music and song. Cosponsors for the Hum were the Charles River Dartmouth Club (President R. C. Litchfield '22) and the Dartmouth Woman's Club of Boston (President Mrs. Seth Fitchet). WilliamPerry '21 and Harry S. McDevitt '07 were in charge of arrangements.

Well over 400 alumni and their wives attended the July event, a real old-fashioned New England Clambake, jointly sponsored by the North Shore Dartmouth Club and the D.A.A. of Boston. The Clambake was held at the Thompson Club, Nahant on July 25.

About 4 P.M. just as the "free" beer was running out, Roland "Pierre" Booma '30 and his two chief assistants, Dan Ruggles '21 and Ed Butterworth '30, started dishing out the chow. For three solid hours it kept coming: Steamed Clams, Hot Boiled Lobsters, Hot Dogs, Chips and Pickles, Corn on the Cob, Watermelon, Ice Cream, Coffee. Nobody, but nobody, went away hungry. The most amazing thing was that due to excellent managing, the cost was only $5.75 per couple.

.Evening activities included dancing and singing. At the end of the day, the general consensus was that the affair was a "howling" and complete success.

The August event was an all day Outing held at the Dedham Country and Polo Club, Dedham. Doane Arnold '27 and his committee (Bill Smart, Ray Gorton and Joe Batchelder) planned a full. day. Some more energetic golfers started in the morning and played 36 holes. Others came about noon to play 18 holes, or take a choice of Softball, tennis, pingpong or horseshoes. About 5:30 singing started at the 19th hole. This was followed at 7:15 by a full-course roast beef dinner. After the meal, many stayed for more singing, cards. A few lucky poker players won back some of the money they had lost playing golf in the afternoon. But that's life and it was a good party.

In September, for the first time in many years, over 600 Alumni of Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth got together at the Harvard Club in Boston for a "Cocktails and Chowder Kick-Off Dinner." Festivities started at 5:30 P.M. and wound up about 10:00 P.M. First on the program were cocktails and a general gettogether followed by chowder, apple pie, crackers and cheese, and coffee. The Harvard Band supplied the music and included among their selections a medley of Dartmouth songs. "Swede Nelson" acted as master of ceremonies introducing head coaches McLaughry, Valpey of Harvard and Hickman of Yale, who gave a forecast of the season. All three coaches agreed that it was going to be an interesting and highly competitive season with lots of good games and surprise upsets.

IN THE CLEVELAND OUTDOORS refreshing themselves at the annual club picnic on June 26, we find (left to right): "Tex" Forbush '23, Jim Rutherford '24 who played host, Rus Treadway '24, George Cornell '44, and Art Hale '2O. George Bissell Sr. '24 and Jr. '5l are smiling on the right.
