Each fall on the evening prior to the Yale-Dartmouth football game, Hartford's loyal Dartmouth sons get together for an evening of fun. This year some 75 showed up at a dinner meeting at the Hartford Golf Club. The usual cocktail hour preceded a delicious dinner.
Dr. Stanley Weld '12, club president, then introduced Karl Michael '29. swimming coach. This was Mike's initial visit to our club, and I'm sure it was the first time most members ever heard much about the swimming team. Mike started with a few comments on the Hanover scene in general, and then proceeded with some interesting comments on the life of a swimming coach. By the end of his talk we were all eager to recruit enough swimmers to enable the Green swimmers to give the great Kiputh's charges at Yale a sound trouncing, this being the only Ivy League swimming team never to have been beaten by Mike's team.
Al Dickerson '30 was the other honored guest of the evening. We are, and always will be, interested in the problem of admissions. Few probably realize the tremendous amount of work that has to be done in a short period of time by a relatively small number of persons. The job appears to be pretty much of a thankless one, with few laughs, and plenty of complaints. It's too bad Al can't personally talk to each father whose son is turned down. I'm sure they would be convinced that the action was just and proper. His talk to us was convincing, and interesting too.
All publications having anything to do with Dartmouth will no doubt splurge on the result of Saturday's game. To those of us in Hartford, this game is perhaps the most important of the season. Hartford is a Yale stronghold of many years' standing. There are five Yale men for every Dartmouth man in town. Yale seems to be everywhere. Any victory over Yale, no matter in what sport, is heartily welcomed. The 41-14 victory won't be forgotten for some time.
