June 1948 GILBERT H. FALL, FLETCHER A. HATCH

Once again death has invaded the ranks of our class. Leslie Orcutt died at his home in Fall River on March 29. His sudden death will be a shock and bring sorrow to all his many friends. Those of us who were in college with "Bill" will always retain the picture of his work around second base on the varsity ball team. We also will never forget his friendliness and his happy disposition. The sincere sympathy of the class goes to his wife and family. Details of "Bill's" life will be found in the In Memoriam section. We are indebted to "Chesty" McCabe for this account.

Congratulations to "Jake" Atwoodj who has been re-elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Florida.

Sympathy of the Class is extended to RoyalParkinson in the death of his father, William D. Parkinson of the Class of 1878. Mr. Parkinson was a prominent educator and a valuable member of his community. His loss will be deeply felt by the college, his class and all who knew him.

Walt and Mrs. Conley are now planning another trip to start July 1. They will be gone for six weeks and will visit Lake Louise, Jasper Park, the Yellowstone and Vancouver. Walt hopes to call on some members of the Class on this trip.

All of Dave Austin's friends will be sorry to learn of his illness which necessitated a visit to Mary Hitchcock Hospital and Dick's House. They will be glad to hear, however, that Dave is making a fine recovery.

Sliver and Alva Hatch are building a new home which, at last reports, is coming along in good shape. They hope to occupy it in the fall.

Ned Estes is spending much of his time at his old homestead in South Berwick, Me. He is playing the organ and directing the music in the First Parish Church in Dover, N. H. The church is certainly fortunate in obtaining the services of such an outstanding musician as Ned.

Carl Getchell is still very active in the practice of law in Lewiston, Me. Carl tells me that the smartest member of his family is his fiveyear old grandson, Carl Nassen Blackstead, his daughter Elizabeth's child. His son, Carl Jr., holds a commission as a Navy pilot and flew in the Pacific during the war.

Some members of our Class are not too old to undertake new tasks. Fred Chase was recently elected president of the Milton Savings Bank of Milton Village, of which he has been a trustee for many years. We wish you, Fred, the greatest success in your new position and congratulate you upon the honor which has been paid you.

It is reported that Doc Wilkins' latest hobby is painting in which we understand he is showing a remarkable talent. We all remem ber Doc's artistic ability when he portrayed feminine characters with the Dramatic Club in college.

Freddie Brown retired from teaching some time ago due to ill health. He has not been well for the last two years but is rapidly improving and expects to return to work soon. Freddie feels that the New England climate is too rigorous for him and plans to move to a warmer section of the country.

Jim Donnelly is still enthusiastic about golf but claims that his game is not what it used to be. His son Jim Jr. is pursuing an accelerated law course at Harvard which keeps him plenty busy. Rosemary is translating French and Spanish medical articles at the Academy of Medicine in New York, while his younger daughter Betty, who graduated from Smith in 1947, is working in the Worcester Art Museum.
