The first '16 Notes of 1948 Belated acknowledgment of Christmas cards from Hollis Nickerson, Fletch Andrews, Dan Dinsmoor and Louie Bell Louie has been awarded his Dartmouth A.B. degree and diploma, due to mopping-up operations at Santa Barbara College He can read his Latin diploma, too Dan Dinsmoor reports Jean home for Christmas after a successful eye operation. Dan is moving to Los Angeles to organize and head a new development department for American Potash and Chemical Corp. He admits wistfully he hates leaving New England friends, but opines he may like life in a semi-tropical climate. Congratulations, Dan. Reading's loss is L.A.'s gain Red Tucker's daughter phoned us going through Washington and we hope to see her on her way back home.
Bill Mackie writes: "I want to express thru you my deepest gratitude to the several members of our class who so thoughfully sent me a deluge of cheery notes and cards during the holiday season. They helped to make for me one of the nicest Christmases 1 ever had, and after a lapse of over 30 years it proves that the Dartmouth Spirit of loyalty and friendship has not lessened. After a year's illness I can thankfully say I am back in circulation again, thanks to the great care given me by my wife Alice, who embodies all the spirit, loyalty and will of a true Dartmouth man's wife. I am going to spend the next three months in Florida where I hope the 'Healthometer' will hit 1000 for me."

Some beautiful photos and also fine reading matter; my mother, visiting from Springfield, Mass., for Christmas, spent most of her time reading School Arts
Tug Tyler spent two weeks in Nov.-Dec. in the Mass. Gen. Hospital for his 18th operation; was doing well and will be back making clubs by this time. Tug was at the Chevy Chase, Md., Country Club in October, the pros there being clients of his. He saw the Cornell game and attended the pre-Harvard 1916 Dinner. His boy Laurence is a senior at Dartmouth.
Quoting Ed Knight's letter that I mentioned in the last Newsletter:
"I was appointed a member of the W. Va. State Soil Conservation Committee in 1945, and this year's Legislature gave $250,000 to buy machinery; I got the job of allocating the money, specifying the machinery to be bought, working up a program for its use. Also the Governor appointed me to the new W. Va. State Apple Commission to promote W Va. apples. Also I was elected President of the Va -W Va.. Shorthorn Breeders Assn. and the S E. W. Va. Purebred Beef Cattle Assoc. I organized' a W. Va. Purebred Swine Breeders Assn. a couple of years ago and am its Secy.-Treas. I just returned from Chicago where I was elected a director of the Tamworth Swine Assn. In addition our business has been expanding in a manner hard to keep up with. I have had to drop most or my dog activities. We are down to a couple of pets at home and a few dogs on the farm. My son is in his second year at U. of Va. Law School. West (By God) Virginia is still West (By God) Virginia and will be until we get East Virginia properly named and designated."
The Secretary had a reunion and dinner recently with Herb Babcock '14, a former Washington boy you may remember as Dartmouth Cheerleader in 1914. He announced the Dartmouth-Penn track meet in 1914: "BudWhitney has no trouble in beating Mike Dorizas of Penn in the 16-pound shotput."
Kay Shaw sends greetings to the Class, saying: "Shorty received loads of cards, all witha nice note on them, from so many men thatI'll never be able to thank them all. Can hisappreciation of their thoughtfulness in remembering him this Christmas be expressedin the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, SO they will all knowhow grateful he is?" Nothing easier or pleasanter than that, Kay.
