President-Emeritus Hopkins Elected Head of National Life Insurance Cos.
March 1948

PRESIDENT Emeritus Hopkins was elected President of the National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier, Vermont, to succeed Elbert S. Brigham, at a meeting of the board of directors January 28.

A director of the company since 1933, Mr. Hopkins brings to the 98-year-old life insurance company his experience in administration, personnel problems and corporate organization. Before accepting the Dartmouth presidency in 1916, Mr. Hopkins was a pioneer in industrial personnel work and has been continually in contact with it through directorates which he has held in various companies including the Boston and Maine Railroad, Continental Can Company and the New England Telephone Company.

Prior to 1916 when employer-employe relations had not been considered in any scientific manner, Mr. Hopkins began organization work for the Western Electric Company at Chicago and later the Filene store in Boston, the Curtis Publishing Company and the New England Telephone Company.

Mr. Hopkins has Jong been a close friend of Fred A. Howland '87, former president of National Life and Alumni Trustee of the College. His service on the board of National Life has given him an insight into the complicated and intricate problems of insurance and of the conduct of the affairs of the company.

Although Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins now have a residence in Montpelier, they will continue also to maintain their Hanover home.
