At our Thirtieth Reunion, the College conferred on Geiger an honorary A.M. and President Hopkins said:
"Emissary who has borne the ideals of an historic North Country College of the East to the public school system of the Northwest; sound and progressive in theory and clean-cut in execution of wise policies, your Alma Mater has pride in the contribution which has been made to the educational establishment of a western city through you, her son."
Now, we have added proof of the justice of President Hopkins' characterization of our classmate.
You will recall that Geiger was principal of the Broadway High School in Seattle from 1904 to 1911, and then went to Tacoma as principal of the high school there, later becoming superintendent of schools in 1912, a position he held until he came back to Dartmouth in 1931. During these years he did more than inculcate good educational practice. He won the respect and affection of both pupils and teachers, as well as the townspeople, as is testified by a couple of events which are to come off next June. At that time, Tacoma is giving Geiger's name to one of its new school buildings, and the Class of 1908 of the Seattle High School has invited Bill and Laura to be its guests (from Thetford to Seattle and back) at its fortieth reunion, when honors will be paid to the whole faculty and the teaching profession. I know Bill thinks this the finest dividend possible on an investment of more than half a century of teaching.
Michel's death (see In Memoriam) brings relief from years of suffering. The last time I heard from him was before our Fiftieth Reunion, when he sent word he was completely incapacitated by arthritis.
