Coach Tommy Dent is faced with the pleasant prospect of building a team about a meager nucleus of 15 returning lettermen, plus some outstanding candidates from last year's freshmen. The team last year won 10 out of 13 starts and generally conducted itself in a manner highly pleasing to the genial Squire of School Street. Captain Bobby Merriam is rounding out one of the most remarkable careers in Dartmouth athletics, having already won letters in soccer (which he captained last fall) and hockey, where he performed on Coach Jeremiah's first line. Bobby did the same thing last year, as a result of which he was awarded the trophy for the best all-around athlete then at Dartmouth.

Among the other veteran performers are Bill Scott, Jim Ruch, Don Scully, and George Day. Newcomers to the varsity include Hammy Gates, captain of last year's freshmen, and defensemen Walt Fisher and Bill Balderston. The spring trip saw the team begin by winning a hard-fought victory over Manhasset Lacrosse Club (12-10), only to succumb to Navy, 13-6, and to Maryland (where lacrosse is a major sport), 17-2. As the team gets some outside practice, its potential offensive strength will begin to show even more conclusively, and the boys will be well on their way to another successful season.
