Following its spring trip to Florida, the Dartmouth crew opened its regular season at home on April 28 by sweeping to a fivelength victory over Clark University on the Connecticut. At Boston three days later the Green oarsmen trailed Boston University on the Charles River Basin by the same five-length margin. Competition then returned to the Connecticut on May 15 when Coach Jim Smith's boys turned in their finest performance to date but still finished three quarters of a length behind Yale's third varsity. The old Henley distance record of 6:35 on the Connecticut was smashed by both crews, Yale setting a new mark of 6:18 and Dartmouth finishing a second or two later. On the same day, in Boston, Yale's powerful varsity was rowing the same distance in 6:16.6 and the Blue seconds were turning in a 6:21 performance, which will indicate that the Yale thirds were a strong outfit, even though the downstream race speeded up the Hanover times to some extent. All hands agreed that the Dartmouth-Yale race was the most exciting seen in these parts since the local revival of rowing.
