HANOVER IS BULGING at the seams," President Dickey told the Dartmouth Club of the Mohawk Valley at its April 1 meeting.

His statement applied equally as well to the existing condition in the Fort Schuyler Club. On the occasion of Prexy's visit, the first official visit of a president of Dartmouth to Utica, 52 alumni, their fathers and sons, gathered to welcome President Dickey and George H. Colton, Alumni Fund secretary.

This was the largest group of local alumni that ever assembled and the response was more than appreciated by the club officers. This outstanding event terminated a series of efforts on the part of the club's "old guard." These efforts have produced a mailing list of 70, a colorful monthly bulletin The Totem, a reply system, many new acquaintances, and the advent of a ticket system.

But Dr. John Dickey turned the final trick. He attracted members who have been with us spiritually but seldom physically. It was good to hear a Dartmouth president speak of the "well-rounded" Dartmouth man. It was better yet to see him act like one;

With the banquet room chock-full, there was scarce an extra ounce of air. But once our long and energetic president began his comprehensive survey of Dartmouth today and tomorrow, no one attempted an extra breath.

My own single regret is that more of our members were not able to see the president some half hour prior to the meeting. Taking advantage of Hanover-like weather which he must have brought with him direct from the Granite State (it seldom occurs here and never for long), Dr. Dickey toted his own satchel.

It did a Dartmouth heart good to see an angular and peppy president of Dartmouth swinging his forty-pound valise in one hand and striding unassumedly up our Genesee Street. I am too young to personally remember President Hopkins in his earlier years. But this informal glimpse of Dr. Dickey gave birth to my own mental reservation, "Without a doubt this self-reliant intellectual is a proper successor to our admired 'Hoppy'." And I am certain that this same reflection flashed through the minds of each of our local alumni during our regular session which President Dickey kept informal.

Enough soliloquizing, be it enough to say, "He came; we saw; he conquered." And George Colton, too, did an excellent job. Preceding the president, he created just the right atmosphere with his first-hand and accurateremarks on Hanover life.

The guest of honor was Thomas Brown Rudd, president of Hamilton College. Roland E. Chesley 'OB and Charles DeAngelis 'O8, president and vicepresident, respectively, led our own parade assisted by receptionist, James N. Brown '23, past president; Joe Kyser '34, treasurer; and the remainder of our "old guard," E. Spencer Liberty '29, Russell W. Hurd '36, Wistar M. Williams '36, Dr. Jim Douglas '23, Ronny Olmstead '32, Russell Murdock '37.

Two other club "fathers," James Capps '19 and Al Lyon '22, headed the father and son brigade which included their respective sons, Bob '51 and Al Jr., also Lewis Veghte and Lewis Jr. '50, Charles and Giles ('51) Hamlin, R. J. Bankert and Ray Jr. '49, Roy E. and John ('42) Adams, Leonard Pelton '18 and son Sam; Dr. Hyzer Jones and son, Theodore R. '46; Dr. F. T. Chase and son Francis Jr. '47; Waldo Prince and son Willard '46; Dr. W. B. Dickson and son, Ken '49.

Others are John Duffy '36, F. E. Jones '14, Lin Young '23, Charles H. Hunt '28, Gil Hurd '41, Everett Schineman '33, Joseph Manganelli '51, Wallace B. Owens '46, William Hayes '40, Thomas B. Quinn '22, H. L. Shuttleworth '35, Rocco Calli, Alex Jones '38, Robert O. Burns, and Keith Fox '31.

THE BIG CHIEF VISITS THE MOHAWK VALLEY: On April 1, President Dickey and George H. Colton of the Alumni Fund spoke before a big crowd at a noon luncheon in the Mulberry Room of the Hotel Utica. Shown here, left to right, are Charles L. De Angelis '08, vice-president of the Mohawk Valley Dartmouth Club, George Colton '35, President Dickey, and Roland E. Chesley '08, Club president.
