College Head 30 Years
November 1949

Dr. Harry W. Chase '04 can't think of a better way to spend three decades than as a college president. On June 31 the 66-year-old New Englander observed 30 years of service as a university head, an academic record which no administrator among the major colleges can match.

Chancellor of New York University since 1933, Dr. Chase was also at the helm of the University of North Carolina from 1919 to 1930. After ten fruitful years at the southern college, he was asked to head the University of Illinois where he earned a reputation which prompted his election to the highest office of N.Y.U.

"Grubbing" in the garden around his small summer cottage in Northport, L. I., Dr. Chase celebrated his anniversary day with his usual summer activities, including a spin on the' bay in his outboard boat.

His years at New York University have been demanding, eventful ones. In his own words, Dr. Chase has "hardly known a normal year" since he assumed the Chancellorship, for he has guided the university through a depression, a world war and, presently, the period of postwar readjustment.
