Robie M. Evans '06 of Philadelphia, U. S. Regional Forester for the 14 northeastern states during the past 15 years, retired from that position on July 31. His retirement marks the closing of a career service extending continuously over 39 years with the Forest Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
A native of Fryeburg, Maine, Mr. Evans taught at Kimball Union Academy for two years after his graduation from Dartmouth, and then entered the Yale Forestry School where he earned his Master's degree in 1910. For his early national forest training he went west and soon became supervisor of the Whitman National Forest, Baker, Oregon. In 1922, he was asked to assist in the organization of eastern national forest. For 12 years he served as Assistant U. S. District Forester in an area embracing 25 eastern and southern states from Maine to Texas.
When the Forest Service administrative system was revised in May 1934, Mr. Evans was designated to head an entire region consisting of 14 states from Maine to Kentucky. In this capacity, he supervised the administration of seven national forests, and was the federal representative in conducting state relations and cooperation in forestry matters and on federal forestry action programs He administered the wartime timber production program in the eastern region and recently was instrumental in developing a compact between states in New England and New York which allows mutual assistance between states in forest fire emergencies
Mr. and Mrs. Evans (the former Ethelyn Hull of Oregon) plan an extended "See America" tour, renewing old acquaintances East and West, before deciding whether to reside permanently in Oregon, New England or Philadelphia
