GAUSERIES—LA VIE SCOLAIRE,
November 1949 Charles R. Bagley

by Alexander D. Gibson '24 et at. Henry Holt & Co.,1949.

This conversation-reader, the outgrowth of the author's teaching experiences in several representative secondary schools, has been designed to meet the needs of boys and girls in second and third-year classes of preparatory school French.

It comprises thirty-one lessons, or causeries, dealing with subjects of interest to preparatory school students of both sexes, such as the arrival at school, meeting the Principal, getting acquainted with one's roommate, the first French class, the meals, seeing the town, taking walks in the country, Christmas vacation, the radio, the French Club, etc.

Each lesson contains two or three pages of conversation in dialogue form, followed by exercises, and a supplementary vocabulary. At the back of the book there is a two-way vocabulary of one hundred eight pages.

It is difficult to appraise a teaching manual without ever having used it. However, from my experience with textbooks of this sort, I venture to predict that this little book, written with the collaboration of two other secondary school teachers, and used successfully in manuscript form, will prove very useful to all preparatory school teachers interested in the oral approach.
