An oil portrait of Dr. Edwin J. "Bubbie" Bartlett '72, one of the most beloved figures ever connected with the Dartmouth faculty, now hangs in the 1902 reading room of Baker Library as a gift to the College from his four children. The donors are Edwin R. Bartlett '04, Samuel C. Bartlett '07, John F. Bartlett '11, and Mrs. Moses Perkins ('02), who before her marriage was Miss Harriet L. Bartlett.
The oil portrait has been painted by Mrs. Harold E. Washburn ('10) of Hanover, wife of the Dartmouth French professor.
Son of President Samuel Colcord Bartlett of Dartmouth, Dr. Bartlett was New Hampshire Professor of Chemistry from 1888 to 1920 and Professor Emeritus from 1920 until his death in 1932. During his long teaching career at Dartmouth he was affectionately known as "Bubbie" to the students and many others. Dr. Bartlett was not only a distinguished member of the faculty; he was also active in alumni and athletic affairs of the College. He was a member of the Alumni Council and also served as President of the Athletic Council. He loved college sports and was one of the founders of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association. In 1918 Dartmouth honored him with the degree of Doctor of Science.
