DARTMOUTH MEN LUNCHEON EVERY MONDAY NOON UNIVERSITY CLUB, CHICAGO
The Second Annual Hanover Holiday in Chicago was a success more whopping than the first one. It was practically an all-day event, held at the University Club, Saturday, February 5.
First there was an informal stag luncheon which attracted 91 of our members. This was followed by two lectures at which we were enabled to continue our Dartmouth education. Prof. Dimitri von Mohrenschildt presented an interesting and learned talk upon the subject "Russia Since The War." This was followed by a discussion of "Great Issues" by Prof. Arthur M. Wilson, former Associate Director of the Great Issues course at the College. These post-graduate classes were attended by approximately 250, which necessitated a last-minute removal of the "classes" to larger quarters.
Sid Hay ward, Secretary of the College, served ably as moderator during the questioning period which followed each talk.
When this period of intellectual stimulation was concluded, we adjourned to the Club's College Room where a lively cocktail party kept us busy for the ensuing two hours. Here classmates and friends joined in happy conversation in the lighter vein characteristic of such affairs.
Members of the class of '29 were most in evidence to honor their classmate, President Dickey. There were Charlie King and his wife, Dick Burke, Louand Jerry Clarke, John and Mildred Clements, EarlFyler, John and Alice Laffey, Baird Rogers of Rockford, Si Snider and doubtless others who we didn't sPy
Frank Hodgdon '96 came all the way from Hannibal, Mo., for the event, and there were others who travelled far for the big day. Bill Knight '08 came in from Rockford with his wife and charming daughter Mary—Smith '48. Al Dodd '35 was in from Elgin and Brown Cooper '10 was here from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Other faces we were glad to see included Leonard Florsheim '36 and wife Nancy; Al Hawkes '38, wife Norma and daughter Martha, age 6 1/2!!!, DickMontgomery '38 and his bride-to-be, Betty Swanson; Laddie Myers '2O, Ken Montgomery '25, Horton Conrad '25, Dick Guntborp '26, Dave List '42,Malcolm McCloud '44, Gordy Hinners '45, TomDavis '48, Connor B. Shaw '43 and wife Betty, and Dr. Joe Bennett '32 and wife Mims.
Our Prexy, Bob Critchell '33., presided at the evening meeting. The following event was a frank and entertaining presentation of the athletic situation by Bill McCarter, Dartmouth's Director of Athletics. The keynoter, of course, was President Dickey who gave an up- to-the minute report on the Hanover Scene. Speaking from the shoulder and the heart President Dickey reaffirmed the College's purpose to promote intellectual integrity and perspective among the student body.
Principal thanks for the success of the Second Annual Hanover Holiday goes to LynShollenberger '33, who arranged and publicized the affair with the skill of a professional, and with the untiring effort representative of the highest in Dartmouth loyalty and spirit.
We should not neglect to mention that Director of Admissions, Al Dickerson '30, was also here, and although not given a formal spot on the program, he was performing most of the day in response to inquiries of Dartmouth Dads and Dartmouth Dads-to-be.
Charming Carla Hawley, daughter of Mrs. Louise Clark Hawley and the late Jess Hawley, was married recently to James Bolger of Chicago.
A recent welcomed out-of-town guest was Sandy Treat 'l9 of the New York Club, who gave a vivid report of the winter sports activity at Dartmouth, including information he had obtained from Sandy Treat Jr., a member of the Dartmouth ski team.
Our Alumni Councillors, Justin Stanley '33 and Bob Borwell '25, have both brought back intimate news of the College as a result of the January meeting of the Alumni Councillors in Hanover.
