Like the fur-bearing Republican who back in '33 swore off shaving until the Democrats might be eased out of the East Room, Class Agent Bill Scherman has steadily declined to furnish a new portrait for these columns until the year when 400 contributors could be counted on the '34 alumni fund roster. We don't mean to say that the familiar Aegis picture was sprouting whiskers (though a beaver would be appropriate for a guy who has worked like one for lo! these many campaigns) but Bill was really hopeful that each year we'd turn the trick. That we never have, in the face of his truly inspiring leadership and the sterling help of his associate agents, will ever remain one of the more confounding mysteries of the Age.
Be that as it may, you see here a verymuch up-to-date likeness o£ the money maestro—and it isn't even spring. It is 1950, though, and as everyone knows this is Our Year. So much our year that all hands are lead-pipe positive that Thirty-Four's '50 Fund record will be second to none. Bill's sure; this department's sure; the Editors are sure; and we hope You're sure. Because if you good lads have the feelin', then how can we lose? And if we can't lose, we win. And Dartmouth wins. And yes, by damn, the whole world wins!
Well, it's in anticipation of this victory that the classy li'l agent has consented to the new glossy. And we're not going to let him down, are we, Gang? We're going over the top this year and have something extra to celebrate at our Hanover get-together in June! Oh happy, happy time!
(Say, that barn of Robin Hood's does have quite a perimeter after all, doesn't it?) Several more of the lads and ladies have had reason for their own private celebrations lately. The Dick Gruens, for instance, delightedly welcomed to 420 East 23rd St. in Manhattan a 7-pound, 2 ounce Dietrich Richard, known as Ricky, who arrived on Jan. 30 and thus anticipated by some 48 hours his pappy's prediction, carried in this space last issue, of a February advent.
The celebration at the Mike Menchels' took place back in September when Susan (call her Suzie) came to share their new home in Drexel Hill, Pa. Shortly before Mike had shifted to the Philadelphia store of John Wanamaker where he continues as one of the chain's chief buyers.
We are somewhat tardy in announcing the birth of the latest youngster to arrive at the Lowell, Mass. home of the Bam Brennons. Robert Cumming made his bow back on May 31, and thus became the kid brother of Jean, 7, and Bud, si/2.
We couldn't exactly be called "Scoop" on this next item, either. For August 12 was the date at the Jack Feths' in Tucson when 2 yr. old Johnny was joined by little sister Jan. Jack writes, "You may be interested to know that I've left the academic field (as of July 1) to work full time for the ground water branch of U.S. Geological Survey. I was lucky in being assigned to Tucson office (we owned our home here while I was teaching at Univ. of Arizona and were delighted to be able to keep it). I had previously worked for the same outfit during two summers and miscellaneous weekends and holiday periods."
Nor will we win any Pulitzer prize on OUT reporting of the first-with-five situations! For now we hastily offer as the earliest '34 quintet the following children of Perry and ClaireGilbert: Ann, 10, David, 8, Stephen, 6, John, 5 and Mary, 2. The whole gang just returned from Baltimore where Perry spent a fivemonth sabbatical leave at the Carnegie Laboratory in the Johns Hopkins Medical School. He is back now at Cornell as associate professor of zoology.
Any more challengers? Speak up, you proud possessors of six or more.
