SINCE DARTMOUTH is well qualified by outdoor tradition and geographical location to develop interest in the Arctic, Vihjalmur Stefansson, well-known explorer and Dartmouth Arctic Consultant, believes that its research may be influential in presenting facts on the advantages of life in the North.

In an interview with The Dartmouth at the conclusion of his recent seminar at the College, Dr. Stefansson said, "Facts show that the population center of the United States is moving South and West. But on the other side of the globe interest runs exactly opposite. In the Soviet Union, development of northern regions is proceeding at a pace reminiscent of the opening of the West."

Dr. Stefansson believes wholeheartedly in the North as a new frontier for civilization. "Dartmouth is certainly one of the more advanced colleges in the field of Arctic work," he said, citing the Dartmouth group who, with David C. Nutt '41, Arctic Specialist at Dartmouth, sailed last summer to Labrador on the schooner Blue Dolphin. Work is now in progress on plans for next summer's expedition for research in northern waters.
