The Long Island alumni group took on its largest assignment ever in sponsoring the Dartmouth-Hofstra basketball game at Hempstead Garden on February 27, and came through with flying colors as more than 1200 people turned out to see the Big Green break up an 11-game losing streak and pull away from the Long Island cagers in the second half to win 53-40.

Our association performed an unusual feat among alumni groups in completely sponsoring the event, assuming full financial responsibility, and making all arrangements. Not only did the contest help to swell our growing scholarship fund by several hundred dollars and provide a fine opportunity for much reunioning among hundreds of Long Island alumni, but it served to bring a portion of the Dartmouth activity into closer focus for the thousands of potential Dartmouth freshmen in this area which year after year furnishes 5% or more of the entering class.

Horace "Jigger" Pender '97, Lino Miller '21 and John Shaw '27, co-chairmen of the affair, and their committees deserve a barrel of praise for their fine job, and in turn the Association extends its heartfelt thanks to the College, the athletic department, the coaches and the team for their splendid cooperation in making the game possible. Similar thanks goes to Hofstra College, their officials and the team for their friendly cooperation, and our Association is proud to have been responsible for the inauguration of relations between the two colleges.

Others serving on the committees for the game included Phil Orsi '28, Bill Bell '37, Dan Denham '31, Al Fisher '29, Carll Buhler '30, Bill Jessup '30, Rog Allen '37, Frank Hall '41, Bliss Thorne '38, Bob Forgan '38, Jack Coulson '39, Wally Rushmore '32, Sid Voice '27, Walt Darby '39, Judge Harry Collins '18, Rudy Preuss '27, Guy Bostwick '27, Frank Rath '30, Mel Katz '33, Lefferts Edson '34, Larry Hull '38, Jack Scott and Jim Higgins '35. President Ed Warnke '19 was not listed on any committee, but he was the human fireball who led the efforts to have this game scheduled and then sparked his committee from the first commitment to the final ticket sale in putting the game over. Not the least of his efforts was the job of selling and producing the attractive program which served as a souvenir of the game.

Dick Holton '18 rounded up some 20 of the local '18ers for the game preceded by dinner at the Garden City Hotel. And Brindley '46, the standout hoopster at Hanover for three years, was busy selling tickets for this one. It was homecoming for WestyField, senior center from St. Albans, who hadn't played on a Long Island court since graduation from Andrew Jackson High in '46. Ed Leede's ('49 and holder of every Dartmouth basketball scoring record) mother and father planned to attend all along, but were especially happy when one of the team members thoughtfully called to ask them to come. The team took their pre-game "sack time" and had dinner at the Roosevelt Field Inn close to Lindbergh's 1927 take-off spot for Paris. Some of the alumni gathered there after the game for a song or two.

Meanwhile Wally Rushmore '32, chairman, is pushing hard for the April 1 appearance of the Dartmouth Glee Club at the Garden City High School. Most of the fellows who served on the basketball committee are helping Wally on this one, and early ticket sales indicate a packed house. Alumni and fathers—send your buck for DUES to Phil Orsi at 14 Bayview Terrace, Manhasset, so you will be able to vote in the annual election in June.
