Long Island's Indian braves turned out some fifty strong at the Garden City Casino on Dartmouth Night to join in the round the-world rendition of "Men of Dartmouth." Chairman Jack Coulson '39 introduced former cheerleader Frank Hall '41, who led the gang in some hearty choruses of "As The Backs Go Tearing By," "Glory to Dartmouth" and "Eleazar Wheelock," plus a few "Indian Yells for the Team" (unfortunately the sound waves were delayed in reaching Tuss McLaughry's boys until after the Lehigh game, but they proved beneficial in Harvard Stadium the following week).
The assembly then tuned in on the Dartmouth Night festivities in Hanover via special recording. The Baker chimes, the messages from President Dickey and Tuss and Paul Staley, the Glee Club renditions of "Dartmouth Undying," etc., and the undergraduate rallying all helped to bring us more completely under the Hanover spell. Guest speaker of the evening was club member Willard Doyle '33, whose subject was unannounced except that it was supposed to be "different" and the time consumed was to be indefinite except that it should last "at least until the beer arrived." The talk proved to be a treatise on snakes (limited to the reptile variety), which was most interesting, qualified as "different" and lasted not only "until the beer arrived" but might be still going had not the speaker felt the need of refreshment to alleviate a parchipg throat. How did this fit into a Dartmouth Night program? Why where else could Willard have first developed a curiosity (intellectual, of course) about snakes, but as a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club?
Once the beer was tapped, the boys got into a musical mood. Carll Buhler '30, OscarHockensen '21, Ed Warnke '19 and WaltDarby '39 provided the melody for some hearty vocalizing by the group, including: Phil Orsi '28, Jay Wilcox '50, Elliott Baritz '49, Don Ballantyn '36, Ray Hadger '29, Dudley Day '30, Ed Wes Goding '39, Horace "Jigger" Pender '97, Buzz Cassidy '42, Al Fisher '29, Al Mackenzie '37, Herm Goodman '32, Jack Morrison '36, Elwood Doyle '36, Tom Muller '48, Bill Mullen '36, Elliot Herrick '38, Dan Donovan '44, Bill Maxson '40, Sid Harrington '40, Rudy Preuss '27, Art Munkenbeck '37, John O'Rourke '47, Bill Fitzhugh '35, Jim Higgins '35, Bill Bachelde '40, Wally Rushmore '32, Bob Darbee '41 and Rog Allen '37.
