Coach Red Hoehn's tennis players had themselves a long and delightful excursion into the Deep South and beyond. They went all the way to Florida, where they were entertained (and soundly beaten) by the University of Miami and the University of Florida. Coming north, the team met and defeated Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and then stopped off at Annapolis to polish off the Navy in the most heartening encounter of the trip. When considering these contests on the spring trip, it must be remembered that none of the teams had as much as stuck its collective nose outdoors before spring vacation. What practice they could get was confined to the cavernous depths of the cage which is not the best place in the world to play a game of tennis.
The Navy match was won by the close margin of 5-4. In order of ranking, the Dartmouth players fared as follows. Number 1 Tom Allen was beaten by his Navy opponent, as was number 2 Park Taylor. The Dartmouth number 3 man, Joe Welch, was also defeated. Then the Green began to roll. Captain Bert Rodman, playing number 4, won his match, as did Jim Myers and Izzy Stahl, playing 4 and 5 respectively. In the doubles, the number 2 team of Rodman and Myers won, as did the number 3 team of Stahl and Sam Vitt, thereby giving Dartmouth a highly satisfactory team victory.
