Lt. Bruce Cunliffe '47, fighting with the Marines in Korea, received news of the birth of his second son under circumstances unusual even for a Marine father.

Mrs. Richard L. Holbrook, his mother-in-law, decided that the usual channels were too slow for notifying a father of his new son's arrival. She went directly to the top "brass" in Washington and received full cooperation from the Marine commandant there. She learned later from Lt. Cunliffe that the good news was radioed to him over the naval radio network used to control gunfire. He reported that he heard the announcement while fighting on top of a mountain ridge northwest of Wonsan, an area being supplied at the time from the air.
