SIXTY-FIFTH reunion badges bearing the words "100% present in body and in spirit" were worn by members of '86 families in nineteen states on Saturday, June 16. These had been sent by mail to Class families by President Billie Newton of Winter Park, Fla., when it developed that a large gathering in Hanover in honor of the 65th anniversary would not be possible. All recipients of badges were invited, if they could not come to Han- over, to join at 1 p.m. on the 16th in thought of the Class and of Dartmouth associations. The focus was a small 1886 reunion luncheon held at the Hanover Inn. Secretary Kelly was present, representing four classmates, Ross,Burley, Newton and Philbrook. George W.Fowler's family was represented by Mrs. Fowler of Suncook, N. H., and their son Charles of Dedham, Mass., and Rev. Leon O.Williams' family by Prof. John R. Williams '20 of the Dartmouth faculty and his wife, who served as hosts for the occasion.
After luncheon, '86 "headquarters" were established under the '86 banner on the porch of the Inn and pleasant calls were received from friends, among them a Class daughter, Dr. Edward H. Ross's Mrs. Helen Ross Chase, who was attending the '96 reunion with her husband, Stephen Chase. Congratulations were extended to the Class, also, by George W. Stetson's granddaughter, Thalia Weston Kennedy, Smith '51, who was in Hanover just preceding the luncheon get-together. During the afternoon several letters were read, and guests were invited to sign a guest book.
Members of the '86 circle were saddened during the week of reunion by news of the death on June 14 of Mrs. John French of Woodstock, Vt., and New York City. She had been taken to the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from her Woodstock summer home following a fall which broke her hip, and she died there two days later. Her residence in Woodstock through the years had made it possible for her to visit Hanover often and she had kept up the strong interest which she and John had in the College and in the Class. Her going will be deeply felt by '86. The sympathy of the Class goes out to her son, John French '30, to her daughters, Mrs. Laurence Rockefeller and Mrs. Ethan Hitchcock, and to their families, all of New York City.
