This was one of the gloomiest baseball seasons in recent Dartmouth history. The team finished the year with a record of four victories against 22 defeats and one tie, which is not exactly an inspiring wonand-lost mark. Inasmuch as these melancholy goings-on would be very ancient (and dismal) history by the time this message reaches you, we shall not go into details. The outstanding difficulty seemed to be in the throwing department, with the pitchers apparently incapable of pitching more than three or four consecutive innings without blowing sky-high. The only really dependable hurler on the squad, Frank Logan, spent most of the season languishing on the bench with a sore arm, so that he was of very little help to Coach Jeremiah's aspirants. Come to think of it, how.ever, the hitting was not too great, either.
The personnel of the squad worked out somewhat as follows in the final games, although Coach Jferemiah was forced' in desperation continually to juggle his players in the vain hope of producing a winning combination. Behind the plate were sophomore Buzz D'Avanzo and junior Buzz Barton. The pitchers who moved in and out of the various contests were (occasionally) Frank Logan, ■ sophomore Pete McKinnon, Dorn McGrath, Jack Sutton, George ("Suds") Bissell and Sandy Wiper. Ev Parker held down first base, Zack Boyages was at second, sophomore Jack Hall at short, and Jackie Hart played his second year at third. The outfield consisted, at various times, of Jim Churchill, Captain Bob Matthews, Bill Johnson, Warren Cassidy, John Brower and Emil Schnell.
At the close of the season, James G. (Jim) Churchill '52 was elected captain for the 1952 season. Churchill has been a regular in the outfield for two years and batted in the cleanup position. He has also done some defensive quarterbacking on the football team and last year won his letter in that role.
