The tennis team had the best season in its history —at least in "modern" times. Coach Red Hoehn's charges did something no Dartmouth team has ever done, and that was to tie for first in the Ivy League. This organization has roughly the same composition as the other similar organizations, with Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Army, Navy, Cornell, Columbia, and Dartmouth making up the roster. The Dartmouth record was four victories and no defeats in League competition, and the tie for first was with Princeton, which also was undefeated. In all fairness, it should be pointed out that, had Dartmouth not been rained out of its meet with Princeton, the Tigers would probably have defeated the Green. Princeton was unquestionably the strongest team in the League. Dartmouth was also rained out of the Pennsylvania match, however, which the Indians would probably have won. But this should not obscure the salient fact that, for the first time since the formation of the tennis league in 1939, Dartmouth went through undefeated.

We noted in our last communique that the first part of the season was climaxed by a 6-3 victory over Yale. The second part of the season was marked by an equally stirring victory over Harvard, an event which has also been infrequent, to say the least, in recent years. The Harvard meet was won by the narrow margin of 5 matches to 4, with the depth of the Dartmouth squad again providing the margin of victory. Playing in the number 1 and number a spots, Tom Allen and Bill Bullen were both defeated, although only after several extra-game sets. Captain Bill Randall was also defeated in the number three singles position. Then the next three singles matches were won by Bill Crotty (captain-elect), Mendy Balkin, and Albie Collins. The number one doubles team was defeated, but the number 2 and 3 teams came through, thereby clinching the match, as noted, by the margin of 5-4. It is a pleasure to offer heartiest congratulations to Coach Red Hoehn, Captain Bill Randall, and the rest of the players who combined to produce this outstanding Dartmouth record.
