This process of depicting one unsuccessful season after another in the roster of the spring sports is, believe me, as distressing to the writer as to the reader. But your correspondent must nevertheless report that the tennis team also had a bad year, ending the season with a record of two wins and nine losses. It just so happened that two or three of the matches that were rained out would probably have resulted in victories for the Green, thereby making the season's record look considerably happier.
As we have repeatedly noted, this was a year for building on the tennis team, as was the case with a number of other sports. This statement becomes even more apparent when it appears that, out of this year's squad, only one man is graduating, namely, Captain Jo Welch. The rest of the team will all be back another year, and they will be helped by at least one outstanding freshman prospect. Returning next year will be Bill Randall, Mendy Balkin, Al Collins, Doc Dey, Chuck Kettering, and Bill Crotty, all of whom have participated in varsity encounters this year.
At the end of the season, Bill Randall was elected captain for 1952. Son of a Dartmouth father (Clifford A. Randall '27), Bill came up the hard way, spending his sophomore year on the junior varsity and then graduating to the varsity this year.
