Soon after our reunion in June at the 65th Anniversary of our graduation, two events happened that deserve first place in the records of the Class of namely: the sudden death of Mrs. Fred Howland, June 19, and then the sudden death of Dan Hadlock, August 6.
Mrs. Fred Howland died suddenly of a "heart condition" at her home in Montpelier, Vt„ June 19, 1952, at the age of 77. Margaret Louise Dewey was granddaughter of Dr. Julius Y. Dewey, Founder of the National Life Insurance Cos. She married Fred Howland February 1, 1899. She and Fred had enjoyed for 62 years a helpful and happy married life. They had four daughters, Louise, Sylvia, Susan and Emily, and have four grandchildren. Mrs. Howland enjoyed close companionship with her daughters and was an acknowledged helpmate to her husband.
Albert E. Hadlock "passed away painlessly Tuesday afternoon (August 6) after an emergency intestinal operation Monday." He was present and cheerful in Hanover June 6-8 at the 65th Anniversary of our graduation. (See group photo, July issue.) He had lived 89 years with honor and credit to Dartmouth. As a student at Hanover he bore the far-fetched and affectionate nickname of "Dan." He was the principal speaker at the Alumni Assembly at Commencement, 1937, our 50th Anniversary. That speech was published in our 50-year book, a printed volume of 189 pages with illustrations (copies are available).
Since his death one professor has written, "I deeply feel the loss of our good old 'Dan.' " A College official writes, "1 quickly came to appreciate the qualities of greatness in the man." Everyone in or out of Dartmouth seemed always to have a good word for our "Dan" Hadlock. He became secretary of the Lawyers' Club of New York in 1929. He served 23 years continuously till his death.
"The Board of Governors, Officers, members and .staff of the Lawyers' Club express their sorrow in the passing of Albert E. Hadlock, their friend and Secretary, and member of the Lawyers' Club for the past quarter century. God's noblest gentleman, he long will be missed and remembered with esteem and affection by us all."
