For his thirty years of service in the parish of Bath, Maine, the Rev. Canon Charles M. Tubbs '04 was honored with a special vesper service, followed by a reception, attended by friends, parishioners, and clergymen of several denominations. Over 300 came to wish Canon Tubbs well in his retirement and to express appreciation of his work. The Rt. Rev. Oliver L. Loring, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Maine, praised his "faithfulness and unselfishness" in the tribute made during the services at Grace Episcopal Church.
Although his retirement is officially in effect, Canon Tubbs is still acting as minister in his church, until his successor is named. He will continue to fill pulpits as a visiting minister as occasions arise.
Canon Tubbs came to Grace Church in 1921 from Easthampton, Mass., where he was rector for more than three years. He had previously served as curate in Springfield and as vicar in West Springfield. He studied for the Episcopal priesthood at Western Seabury Seminary, Evanston, Ill.
A modest man, he had only one picture of himself to send on, when requested to do so by his class secretary. Of this, taken on the Maine shore near his home Canon Tubbs writes, "I seem to be looking for a congregation, for a photographic view, or simply for the way to go home. The wind emphasizes my baggy knees."
