THE rank of Emeritus Professor was conferred upon six retired members of the Dartmouth faculty by the Trustees at the annual Commencement meeting of the Board on June 7.
Those who have been given Emeritus status, effective next September, are: Rees H. Bowen '26h, Professor of Sociology; Peter S. Dow, Thayer '11, Professor of Graphics and Engineering; Francis J. Neef '2311, Professor of German; and Chester H. Forsyth '3911, Professor of Mathematics. Granted Emeritus rank effective at the end of the first semester of 1952-53 are Wm. Stuart Messer '2311, Daniel Webster Professor of the Latin Language and Literature, and Raymond W. Jones '2411, Professor of German.
Promotions in the Dartmouth Medical School and the Thayer School of Engineering were also announced following the June meeting of the Trustees. Seven members of the Medical School faculty were promoted from Instructor to Assistant Professor as follows: John S. Lyle '34, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology; William L. McLaughlin '36, Assistant Professor of Urology; Hanford L. Auten '32, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology; and Jarrett H. Folley, John Milne '37, Jackson W. Wright '33, and F. Corbin Moister '37, all promoted to Assistant Professor of Medicine.
In the Thayer School, Edwin A. Sherrard was promoted from Assistant Professor to Professor of Mechanical Engineering; while James A. Browning '44 was raised from Instructor to Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
