April 1953

THE editors for some time have wanted to tell the alumni more about Dick's House, one of Dartmouth's distinctive assets. With the help of Staff Photographer Adrian Bouchard, we present this month a pictorial feature on the infirmary, endeavoring to show how its exceptional facilities, its efficient administration, and its general quality and spirit add to the overall excellence of the Dartmouth College Health Service. Four pages of photographs begin on Page 16.

Members of the Dartmouth faculty, with- out fanfare, often fill outside positions that serve the nation and democracy. One of the top assignments of this sort in recent years was that undertaken by Ralph A. Burns '34h, Professor of Education, who for four years was Chief of the Cultural Affairs Branch for HICOG in West Germany. In that post he was in charge of the exchange of persons program which has played such a vital role in the "cold war" effort to win Germany over to democracy. In this month's article, Catalystsfor Democracy (Page 20), Professor Burns writes about the beginnings and development of the present exchange program.

The Cover Whatever the outside weather, it's spring in Clement Greenhouse, which has been going its own small, quiet way for 25 years. Adrian Bouchard's cover photo shows three Botany majors enjoying the firm footing and vernal display.
