These notes will be brief, by request of the editor, to give more space to the listing of participants in the Alumni Fund of 1954. Says the editor, happily: "The Fund lists this time will be the longest we have ever printed."
Heard and seen in Hanover since last we met: H. C. and Peg Bean, naturally, Bill andRuth McKenzie, Art and Mrs. Conley, Philand Julia Nordell, Larry and Lee Hayward,Alec and Estelle Jardine. Lucky people, to be so near the campus.
Bob Brown was among Masons honored by receiving the 33rd Degree in Boston recently, a very great distinction.
Jim Coffin, the official leech of Nashua (he works for the Blood Bank) got a thought-provoking query from one of the Class (name unknown) when he sent out bills for class dues. "Why don't you cut out class dues?" Jim suggests his reply might clear up a few points for others who have the same question in mind.
"Basically, the class dues support the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. The Class of 1916, along with most of the other classes, sends the MAGAZINE to any member who has contributed to the Alumni Fund or has paid dues in the past three years. But no portion of the Alumni Fund goes to pay for the MAGAZINE, so it is those who pay dues who support the MAGAZINE. The Class also sends the MAGAZINE (free of charge) to the widows of classmates who still evidence an interest in reading it. Currently there are about twenty on that list. If you know of any who are not getting the MAGAZINE and would like it, please let me know. We pay $3 for each male subscription and $2 for each one sent to widows. Last year we sent the MAGAZINE to 192 graduates, 53 non-graduates and 19 widows, a total charge of $773. Cliff Bean sent out a Bequest Program brochure that cost $60, and the Class gave $15 towards the Dr. Bowler Memorial. We spent $50 in stamps and flowers. That makes a total of $898. I collected dues from 176 at $6, or $880. So you see we were $18 in the red."
Jimmie got a check right back from the man who asked an honest question and got an honest answer.
Louis Bell announced the arrival of his first grandchild, Andrew Louis Bell, born in Berkeley, Calif., September 9. Louis Jr. married Anne McKenzie, Bryn Mawr '51, of Alameda, Calif. They live in Berkeley and Louis Jr. works for the U. "Of California's Radio Service, writing scripts for the programs sponsored by the University, one the University Explorer, which has been on the air over CBS for more than twenty years, and the other, the Science Editor on the ABC network. Louis and Mary flew up to take a look at their grandchild and report him a definitely superior youngster.
Louie also reports a brief telephone chat with Pete McCoy, who was a speaker at the California AFL convention in Santa Barbara. He also had a short talk over the wire with Stew Paul in Los Angeles. Stew's routine program is more than full, so he can never light in one piace for long. Incidentally, Louis is now chairman of the Santa Barbara Joint County and Cities Civil Defense Planning Board, and is executive officer of the Santa Barbara City Civil Defense and Disaster Corps. On the side he is working for the County Republican Central Committee and was helping plan, when he wrote, a Ladies Night for the members of the Santa Barbara Dartmouth Club.
Charlie Brundage, in addition to other activities, is now director of a big trust company which has opened a new and magnificent office in Morriatown, N. J.
We announce with sorrow the death of Donald ("Curly") Wessel in Salem, Mass., on October 10, and of John B. McAulifEe on October 30.
