An unusually high number of our classmates, for this period in our lives, have died, it seems to me. It may just be that I personally knew a disproportionate number of these young men at Thayer Hall while we toiled collectively in the dishroom (who can forget the ignoble "pit," with its übiquitous scraps of rejected quasicomestibles). Thus I often remember in sadness some of our brethren who have passed on: TomCranna, Andy Zigelis, Bob Meyer, PaulRoewade, and Dave Evans, to name but a few. I think that the entire class would greatly welcome anecdotes about any of our deceased classmates. Please take the time to write and I will most certainly include your remembrances in future issues.

On the lighter side, our class continues with major success stories. Dick Hofmann has been promoted from executive vice president of a subsidiary to president of the entire Continental Can Co. Congratulations to Dick on this remarkable achievement. Dick tells me, by the way, that company workers are, when necessary, fired, let go, released, etc. But they are never, never canned!

Tad Cantril has become director of the Bureau of Social Science Research, Inc. in Washington. Tad had previously served in the White House, the Department of State, and the Bureau of the Budget. Tad's forte, besides blowing a mean trombone, is polling (he was president of the National Council on Public Polls).

Dan Tompkins has received an award for outstanding undergraduate teaching by the American Philological Association. Dan, a member of the Classics Department at Temple University, is a specialist in Greek literature and history. An apocryphal story about Dan has it that upon being asked by a student about the meaning of a particularly abstruse passage in the text he replied: "Gee, I don't know; it's Greek to me!"

Dave DeWilde has been named executive vice president for policy and planning for the Federal National Mortgage Association. He previously served as an investment banker and former president of the Government National Mortgage Association. Put in bankers' lingo, Dave is going from Ginny Mae to Fanny Mae. Dave is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and was associated with the Wall Street law firm of Curtis, Mallet-Provost at al.

I had a cute letter from Bill Pierce, who is now senior vice president at Chemical Bank in New York City. Proud Papa Bill notes that: "After 14 years of free and easy marriage and 40 years of age (mine, not Liz's), Liz and I have drastically changed our life style. Will Pierce was born on February 20, 1981, and has made his arrival, or should I say takeover, at our brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. We're sure he will keep us young (we hope!). I'll be the one changing diapers at our 20th reunion."
