As indicated by the list accompanying this column, a large number of you have responded positively and generously to the recent Alumni Fund pleas of Stet Whitcher and his capable team of agents. We hope that the record will continue to improve and the Fund to prosper as more of you find means and opportunity to give tangible support to the College in the future. Stet and Class Newsletter Editor Dave Leake are planning to pass their respective batons to a new team for the next campaign. On behalf of the Class and the College, I want to thank them for their unstinting effort and devotion towards the fulfillment of these important positions of responsibility in the Class during the past two years.
Dartmouth's football fortunes have been alternately waxing and waning this fall, but whether winning or losing, the team has had support from Forty representatives at all games thus far this season. The Holy Cross game was witnessed by Moody and Rainie. Those at the Navy encounter included StaffKing, Bob Rodday, Steve Jewett and JackO'Shea. Bill Squire and Lew Lambert lent their moral support at the Colgate fray. The Harvard contest, minus the usual pre-game boat ride this year, saw J. F. O'Brien, TedMiller, and Whitcher among those present and enjoying a perfect afternoon both in weather and final score.
Your reporter personally sat through the rain and gloom of the Yale game, along with quite a few others from our class. The thrill of the first-period touchdown for the Big Green became well watered down (literally and figuratively) by the time the final whistle had blown. However, the team gave a fine account of itself in what everyone characterized as a very good contest to watch, despite the weather. Seen in the Bowl were Jack andFan Willson, Gordie and Rosalie Wentworth,Bill Daniels, George Johnson, John Burnap,Bill Bumsted, Fred and Ann Porter, Harryand Lenore Howard, Eddie and Pat Miller, and Malcolm and Gina de Sieyes. Said to have been there, although not seen, were JordanVan Cleve and Ben Bacon. Joe and JoyceAdams were encountered at a post-game party.
From Harry Hillman, on the international team of General Motors, comes word that he has settled down for the present in Venezuela. Harry has been carrying on in an export career with General Motors Overseas Operations since 1946 when he went to Australia for that company. Beginning in 1952 he came home for a two-year stint in the New York headquarters. Then, last June, the Hillmans packed off for Caracas, Venezuela. Harry extends a cordial invitation to any members of Forty who may be down his way on business or pleasure to look him up for drinks, dinner and even a night's lodging - "there's plenty of room." He can be located at the General Motors plant in Caracas.
Major Joe Rinehart, U. S. Marine Corps, is now stationed in Fuji, Japan. Joe reentered the Corps in 1950, and is presently serving with the 3rd Marine Division Service Battalion.
Also still in the service, Lt. Col. Joe Bird, U. S. Air Force, recently was appointed to the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Joe has been in the weather headquarters of the U.S.A.F., at Washington, D. C., since 1951, and most recently has been deputy chief of staff for operations there.
