The current version of the Dartmouth track team would seem to bear out that old saw - "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." The Indians have now lost three straight dual meets and all by lopsided scores. Since last report Army defeated Dartmouth 87-22 and Harvard rolled over the Indians 79-30. Brown is the only dual meet remaining and Coach Ellie Noyes has hopes that his team will manage somehow to get by the Bruins. Against Harvard only Walt Clarkson in the mile and Lou Metzger in the pole vault were able to win firsts. Bob Jeffery took a second in the 35-pound weight throw, while John Harlor took third in the high jump, and Pete Jebsen second in the 660-yard run. These above mentioned men along with Gary McKee in the hurdles and Carl Marshall, Paul Merriken, Pete Jebsen and Walt Clarkson on the relay team also accounted for most of the Dartmouth points against Army.
As pre-season reports indicated, Dartmouth is only fair in the field and distance events. In the hurdles, dashes and middledistance events the Indians are woefully weak, and there is a very definite lack of depth all down the line. The frosh track team defeated Andover 76½ to 22½, but had its hopes dashed by Harvard which walked away with a 69-21 triumph. There is little hope that much help for the varsity will come from this year's frosh team. It appears that Coach Ellie Noyes faces a major rebuilding task if Dartmouth track squads are to offer any real competition within their league.
