Clear skies and a smiling sun were the order of the day in Hanover during the first two weeks of April while the Dartmouth varsity teams in baseball, tennis, lacrosse and golf were touring the Southland. However, the weather changed rapidly the day college reopened following the spring recess, and rain coupled with a cold spell dashed all hopes of the squads getting outdoor workouts during the first week of their return. However, spring has come early and with the official varsity schedules due to begin the third week of April it appears likely that the setback in weather is only a temporary one. The baseball diamond, with its new resurfacing job, looks as trim as it ever has, the tennis courts are rolled and ready for action, while Tom Keane reports that the Hanover golf courses are well ahead of schedule in playing condition. All in all, it seems a fairly normal spring in Hanover.
As far as the varsity spring teams are concerned, it seems that they too are in for a fairly normal spring, at least on the basis of their showing during the recess. During the southern jaunts the Big Green baseball club won three and lost six games, the tennis team emerged with one win against six defeats, the lacrosse men won four and lost three, and the golf team had a 4-4 split. The overall mark for the spring trip, thus, shows 13 victories against 19 defeats, which isn't too bad considering that the opposition for the most part came from southern teams who had outdoor workouts for a month or more before they met the Dartmouth squads, fresh from the great indoors.
Generally speaking the Dartmouth coaches of the above sports feel that their teams performed about as expected. All will admit that they have problems to solve before the season officially opens and that personnel-wise they could be a lot better off. Privately they all hope that there may be surprises along the line and that sophomores will step in to fill some of the gaps, but on paper and on the basis of the spring trips little more than a fair to middling season can be expected.
