So far as your Secretary knows, Dartmouth has never had twin Senior Fellows before this at any time in its history. It took a 1930 father to produce them. And how justifiably proud Bill Blanchard must bel His twin sons, Richard S. and William C., were two of the nine men in the junior class at Dartmouth who were appointed Senior Fellows for the year 1954-55- Richard, who is the leading scholar in the junior class, took as his project, The Economic Effects of American Tariffs and the Relations of These Tariffs to the American Position in International Affairs." His twin brother William, who followed in second place scholastically in his class, took as his project, "The Communist Party in America." Congratulations are certainly in order to father and sons!
The Class of 1930's local Hanover contingent lost a long-time member on February 1 when Hank Odbert was granted leave of absence from the College to serve as Director of the Technical Information Division of the Air Force Personnel and Training Research Center at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. Hank sold his Hanover home at 6 Conant Road to Red Rolfe, Dartmouth's new Director of Athletics, and is now residing in San Antonio at 323 Senisa Drive The numerical depletion in 1930S Hanover ranks was short lived, however. Bill Bragner, Superintendent of Schools in Metuchen, N. J., was named principal of the Hanover High School by the Hanover School Board. Bill holds a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Boston University and has done some special advanced study at Rutgers University. He has previously taught at Cushing Academy, was principal of Windsor (Vt.) High School, and prior to becoming principal at Metuchen High School, was director of student teaching at Plymouth (N. H.) Teachers College. Bill plans to move his family to Hanover in the early summer as soon as they find a place to live.
Hal Booma was appointed by the executive committee of the board of directors of United Shoe Machinery Corp. as an assistant general manager at a meeting held in early March. Hal has served with United Shoe Machinery Corp. since ' 1931. In 1945 he was placed in charge of shoe machinery research and development and was appointed assistant director of research in 1947* As assistant general manager, in his new position, Hal s responsibilities will include liaison between the commercial and research divisions.... Dud Day, formerly an assistant secretary of International Telephone and Telegraph Corp., was appointed secretary and counsel of Federal Telecommunication Laboratories, at Nutley, N. J., at a meeting of the I.T.&T. Board held on last November 12. As a result of this new appointment, Dud moved his family from Long Island to 77 Club Road, Upper Montclair, N. J Fran Horn, as president of Pratt Institute, recently announced plans of a $1,750,000 development program of Pratt Institute to improve campus facilities and expand professional programs. Fran will be officially inaugurated as president of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn on May 15. Prof. Francis L. Childs will be Dartmouth's official delegate Sam Slayman placed fifth in the first international all-star individual championship in contract bridge which was held during March at Monte Carlo. He was also participating as a member of the United States four-man team which was conceded to have a very good chance of winning the team event.
Fred Scribner, Republican National Committeeman from Maine, was one of the key figures at the Republican State Convention held in Bangor, Maine, April 1 and 2. He had the honor of introducing Senator William F. Knowland of California, the keynote speaker, on the second day of the convention. Fred is General Counsel of the Republican National Committee as well as member from Maine.
Kirk Jackson is general manager of C.G.S. Laboratories in Stamlord, Conn., this being an electronic research and development company which specializes in controllable inductors. Kirk says that he sees Jack Kealing once in a while, Jack being the august judge of the Probate Court of Fairfield County, Conn. But the biggest news in the Jackson family was the arrival of Bonnie Jeane on January 12, 1953. Until others of you authoritatively dispute his claim, Kirk alleges that Bonnie Jeane is the youngest offspring of the Class of 1930....7. Walker "Dean" Wiqgin is a member of the board of directors of the Crotched Mountain Foundation, New Hampshire's official Easter Seal Agency, and Dean has been active in the Faster seal campaign which started in mid-March.
1 The Bob Blanehard family were victims of an epidemic of appendectomies. Roy, their older son, had his "bout" last August, while Mark, their younger son, had his emergency operation in January. Page, the dutiful correspondent of the Bob Blanchards, reports that both boys are fine now The Class of 1930 has kept to the rostrum. Red Alcorn, the Republican national committeeman from Connecticut, was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Women's Republican Club of Meriden, Conn., during February. In addition to his many other activities, Red was president of the Connecticut State Bar Association in 1950-51 Dick Fiinkhonser, who is an economist on the staff of Stanford Research Institute, gave a paper in Washington, D. C., at a seminar sponsored by the Railway Systems and Procedures Association. Dick's talk involved the study of rail-truck coordination.
Ewing I. "Cupe" Bums sent a letter to Treasurer Charlie Raymond from Ada, Okla., which defies paraphrasing: "Three years ago we headed south and finally wound up buying a teed and seed business here in Ada, capitol of 'Little Dixie.' Believe it or not, you can almost count the Republicans in this county on two hands. It may seem a strange setting for a Kansas Republican, but manage to bear up under it. Intend to drop you a line some time later with more vivid details - meanwhile, wish you would use all your influence to increase the consumption of beef.
