Fund Gifts Larger
May 1954

Nineteen days after the 1954 Alumni Fund campaign began on April 1, with a goal of $660,000, the dollar tally was $197,078 - a slight gain over the total on the same date last year - but the number of contributors, 3600, was down 350 from the comparable 1953 figure. The encouraging thing was that the average gift was running $5.00 higher than last year, $54.74 as against $49.55.

The month of May, mid-point of the campaign ending June 30, will give the class agents a chance to get in some of their most solid work. By May 15 last year the Fund had $333,000 from 7,952 contributors, and gains over both of these figures are counted on for the MAGAZINE'S next interim report.

The Fund Committee's general mailing piece for May 1 is a statement by President Dickey entitled The Dartmouth Fabric, 1953-54- After writing of the daily cross-threads of Dartmouth life, President Dickey concluded: "More than we hardly dare let each other know, over the past forty years, our understanding and our help have become the measure of an institution's aspirations. A prouder chapter in American education has never been written than the Dartmouth Alumni Fund now puts it into our power to write."
