The best spring-trip record turned in by any team was that of the Big Green golfers. Coach Tom Keane's men won six matches and lost only three. The Big Green lost the opener to Virginia 5-2, then upset William and Mary 7½-2½ in the rain, but lost 5-4 on the following day. V.M.I, beat the Indians 6-3 and then Dartmouth went on to defeat George Washington 7-2, Johns Hopkins 8½-½, Navy 4-3, Loyola 7-2 and Penn 4-3. The victories over Penn and Navy were very much in the "upset" category as both the Middies and Quakers are rated highly in the Middle Atlantic conference.
Only two lettermen - Captain Bill Rex and Al Anderson - are on the squad, but sophomores like Fred Oman and Don Purple along with seniors Skip Weymouth and Tom Sayles and juniors Dick Drake and Don Kurth give Dartmouth one of its strongest golf teams for some time. The 1953 golf team had 12 wins and only four defeats last season, but from the showing put on during the current spring trip, the 1954 squad may do even better.
