The Dartmouth Rowing Club crews got away to their earliest start in history this spring when they took to the Connecticut River on March 5 in shells protected by fiberglas. Varsity heavyweight coach Pete Gardner reports he plans to have three varsity heavyweight shells this spring and has a host of lettermen returning plus some good sophomore prospects. The Big Green oarsmen are getting set for the annual EIRA June regatta at Syracuse where they hope to finish well up in a field of 13 entries.
Freshman Coach Phil Cole, back for his fourth season, is also optimistic about the '61 crews this spring, with some real talent available, while senior Ray Hilsinger, who coaches the 150-pound light- weight crews, reports another fine season ahead.
Dartmouth's informal Rugby Club opened its spring season officially at the Bermuda Week Invitational Tournament where they were defending champions. The Big Green ruggers thumped the Bermuda Barbarians, 9-0, and edged past M.I.T., 3-0, to enter the finals for the Bermuda Cup against Princeton. After a scoreless regular game, the Indians bowed 3-0 when the Tigers scored on a penalty kick. Since then the Rugby Club has posted a 13-5 win over Yale and next meets Princeton, Montreal and Harvard. The team, led by Captain Barry Stompe, is one of the strongest in the East, and should win most of its games this spring.
The 25-year-old Dartmouth Corinthian Yacht Club is expected to observe its anniversary with one of the best seasons in recent years. The varsity sailors got away to an impressive start when they finished second in the annual MacMillan Cup Races at Annapolis in early April. Ten of the top eastern college teams were entered. In most recent action the Big Green sailors finished third in a meet at the Coast Guard Academy. The freshman sailing team also looks promising as it captured first in the meet at Coast Guard. Dann Lewis '59 is Club Commodore this spring. Dartmouth hosts one meet on Lake Mascoma during Green Key weekend, with teams from six eastern colleges invited to participate.
