As A GIFT from Robert Jackson '00 and his daughter, Mrs. M. Dorland Doyle, both of New York City, Dartmouth College has received the rare English 17th century chair shown in the photograph above. The chair is a companion piece to a valuable Chippendale side table given to the College by Mr. Jackson and his daughter in 1952.
The chair, which has been on display in the Carpenter art galleries, dates from about 1670 and is in its original condition except for the caning in the seat. Made of walnut, it has finely carved detail, surmounted by an eagle. Experts have praised it as a very rare chair of the finest quality.
The Chippendale side table given to the College in 1952 is one of the finest examples of that designer's art and is listed in all the books about him and is used as an illustration in several. Mr. Jackson, who is president of the National Fuels Corporation, obtained it in London. The table is seventy inches long and has a marble top. It has been valued at $7,500.
