Immediately following the spring recess, the second-year civil engineering students gathered at Pottstown, Pa., for a three-day inspection of engineering projects under the guidance of Professors John Minnich '29 and EdBrown '34. At the fabrication plant of the Bethlehem Steel Company in Pottstown, the class had the privilege of seeing bridge plans translated into templates and, thence, into steel girders. The following day was spent in the vicinity of New York examining the details of the many famous old and new bridges spanning the Hudson, Raritan, and East Rivers. On Wednesday the group had the opportunity to inspect the notable new building of the Wyman-Gordon Co. in Grafton, Mass. After visiting several sewage treatment plants in Marlboro, Leominster, and Fitchburg, the class returned to Hanover Wednesday night to resume more formal education.
At the spring meeting of the executive committee of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers in Hanover on April 30 were Phil Thompson '09, Rudy Miller '20, Herb Darling '27, ShawCole '30, Charley Hitchcock '39, and HermanDressel '46. Following the committee's deliberations, members and faculty enjoyed a dinner at Thayer Hall. Joining the group in the evening was Ossian Brainerd '29 who is now the owner and operator of the Jenny Lind Motel in Northampton, Mass., following his retirement from the position of City Manager of Northampton.
A recent picture (of a bridge, of course) postcard post-marked Rome has been received from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cudworth '02 who are enjoying an extended trip on the continent.
A news item gleaned from The Winstonian, publication of Winston Bros., mentions the unsuccessful efforts of Hanque Parker '47 to find living quarters for his family in Cartagena, Colombia, where Hanque is superintendent of the Gambote-Cartagena section of the Colombian Highway. Until Hanque can locate satisfactory accommodations, Mrs. Parker and their daughter will live in Bogota.
Practically simultaneous letters were received from Bob Fiertz '52 and Jack Woods '52 informing us of their own and each other's imminent induction into the armed forces. Bob has been at Circleville, Ohio, working on the construction of a new plant for duPont. Jack mentions his recent engagement to SueSwenson, Smith '54, and their plans for the big event sometime next Fall.
The recent arrival of twin sons to the JackLovewells '44 has increased their growing family to four. Jack is with Metcalf and Eddy, Boston. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Barr '50 have announced the arrival of William Gaxton Barr on April 12.
