OUR "thirty-first" proved to be the most successful and enjoyable in the memory of those who attended and set a record of classmate attendance at a Thirtieth Reunion. A total of 243 persons were present composed of 110 men, 71 wives, and 62 children. Those from the greatest distance were Frank andGladys Doten, Rio de Janeiro; Monk Keith, San Jose, Costa Rica; and Ralph Staley, Long Beach, Calif.
Reunion commenced with registration Friday afternoon outside the class tent where the Welcoming Committee made everyone feel at home on arrival. Our Bag Pipers and Drummers piped us to the Canoe Club area alongside the Connecticut River for cocktails, bean-hole picnic, and stories by the famous D.O.C. Adviser Ross McKenney. We attended President and Mrs. Dickey's at-home reception on the Dickeys' lawn and finally returned to our super-sized tent where the evening really commenced. One could say that movies of the Fifth, Tenth, and Fifteenth Reunions were shown, and a picture gallery so priceless and interesting that it had to have a custodian was on display. There was also singing. But a fuller account of both Friday and Saturday night class tent activity will be contained in an early Skiddoo - it is much better that way. Our sons and daughters took over for us at the Reunion Dance, which featured a fifteen-piece band with vocalist.
We had a separate program for the sons and daughters and invited those of 1924 and 1925 to join ours, which made a total of about 150. Friday evening before the dance a Get-Acquainted Party at College Hall was held. Saturday morning hayrack rides through the Vermont Hills were arranged with bus transportation provided between Hanover and Norwich. Inn breakfasts and luncheons were provided. Saturday afternoon the following events were arranged: 34-piece Fife & Drum Corps "Exhibition" on Campus, Treasure Hunt with excellent prizes, Tennis Tournament, with trophies won by 1924 and 1925, and a Jam Session with live band and vocalist in College Hall. Saturday evening, for those not attending the Players' show, a record hop was held in College Hall.
Saturday proved another perfect day in all respects including the weather. The class picture was taken at 10:45 a.m. The Class Meeting included our wives for the first time. It was voted unanimously to continue the Scholarship Fund as a project and to do something about it. Our new officers for the next four years will be: Charlie Zimmerman, President; Chet Bixby, Secretary; Pete Jones, Treasurer; Ted Shapleigh, Class Agent: and three regional vice-presidents - Butch Kimball, Chicago and Mid-West; Clarence Goss, New York area and the East; and Jim Broe, New England excluding Southern Connecticut adjacent to New York City. Irish will serve, and it was over his protest, as Advisory Editor of Skiddoo. He will appoint a committee of editors to get out Skiddoo and will advise them just how much can be incurred without an actual libel suit.
The Alumni Luncheon was fine in that an excellent buffet was offered, and the meeting was great because Charlie Zimmerman was at his best as the principal speaker. He was introduced by Horace Taylor. Right at this moment the 1923 Fife & Drum Corps took it upon themselves to serenade the alumni at the Gym. Without blinking an eye or losing a word, Horace just turned up the loud speakers until the Fife and Drum Corps retreated to the campus where their talents were more appreciated.
Cocktails were served on the Inn Terrace and in the Ski Hut during the late afternoon. At the Class Dinner in Thayer Hall, Truman gave his sincere thanks to the Class for the fine support he had received as Secretary-Chairman. He presented in the name of the Class a small gift to the Dotens for having come the longest distance. Truman introduced Charlie Zimmerman as the Master of Ceremonies who then took over. Bud Freeman presented to the College the 1923 Scholarship Fund of something over $10,000, and this sum was accepted by George H. Colton for the College. Horace Taylor, for the Class, presented Dartmouth Trays to the four retiring Class Officers: Truman Metzel, Colin Stewart,Lee Young, and Irish Flanigan. Horace also presented Oscar-like statuettes entitled "Miss 1923" to Barrie Landauer, Vassar '56, and one entitled "Mr. 1923" to Eric Rippel, Dartmouth '57, as the son and daughter most responsible for the great success of the Sons and Daughters Program. The selection was hard because all of our sons and daughters gave their fullest cooperation. Jack Booth and Mox Hubert led the men in "Men of Dartmouth." after which we reluctantly left Thayer Hall.
Many attended the excellent performance of Harvey at Webster Hall by the Dartmouth Players, and everyone later met at the class tent - a full report of which will appear in your next Skiddoo.
A Memorial Service for our 101 deceased brothers was conducted by Bishop John Dallas at Rollins Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
A professional photographer took some 300 colored candid still pictures of groups during the entire Reunion. These are being edited and will be shown at 1923 group meetings in Boston, New York, Cleveland, and Chicago during the coming year and at future Reunions.
No one member of the Reunion Committee desires any publicity, fame, or appreciation. The expressions on the faces of all those who attended the Thirty-First Reunion showed that they were having a wonderful time (especially the sons and daughters) and this made up one hundred fold for the worry and work experienced in conducting this Reunion.
EDITOR'S ADDITION: The 1923 class officers, by special emissary, have inquired whether Jim Broe reported in his reunion story that he had received a rousing and standing vote of appreciation, at the class banquet, for his work as '23 reunion chairman. That fact seems to be missing from his own account, and we hereby add it.
