Some things never change and, as the "before" and "after" shots in this layout attest, some things do. The Chamberlain Lounge (below) in the Office of Admissions suite, named for former director of admissions Edward T. (Eddie) Chamberlain, Jr. '36, is a stunning departure from the gloomy offices many an earlier prospect visited on a trip to Hanover. College architect George Hathorn used a great deal of imagination in restructuring the overall look of the Chamberlain Lounge. In earlier times (above right), the admissions office seemed mired in the cumbersome mode of heavy Victorian doors, unattractive linoleum floors, and very little external light. The linoleum, incidentally, has been replaced with a dark green patterned rug, and the plaster wall has given way to sparkling glass panes, and a doorway echoing the distinctive shape of the limestone entrance to McNutt Hall.
Before the renovation, the lovely Palladian window (above) just outside Dean A1 Quirk's office was virtually obscured with Venetian blinds and wooden louvers. Today (below), it serves as the backdrop for the new presentation room. The doorframe (below right), once hidden in a back office of the news service on third floor McNutt, has been given new shape as the entrance to the new conference room (upper right).
