Paine Knickerbocker '33, a veteran newspaperman in San Francisco, was recently made drama editor of the SanFrancisco Chronicle. He reversed a usual trend: starting out in advertising in New York shortly after graduation, he became a reporter four years later on the Portland Oregonian.

While he worked as a publicist in San Francisco, he received the Master's degree in English at the University of California, and for two years before the war, he was assistant to the president of Mills College. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy in the Pacific, then in 1945 became San Francisco correspondent for the Oakland Tribune. He joined the Chronicle staff in 1952, where he has worked as a reporter, City Hall reporter and assistant city editor.

Married, Mr. Knickerbocker and his wife are the parents of a daughter Peggy, 10, and Tony, 8.
