It is a great pleasure to report that the class dinner commemorating John Dickey's tenth year as president of the College was a tremendous success. There were 139 people present at the dinner and practically all of these people were there in time to enjoy the cocktail hour first. After a most enjoyable dinner had been finished, Jack Gunther as president of the Dartmouth College Club of New York, to which office he was recently elected for a two-year term, welcomed those present in a most befitting manner and introduced Bill Andres who was the "toastmaster" for the evening.

In introducing our other honored guest, President Emeritus Hopkins, Bill said, in part,

"No man bearing this proud title is better entitled, or wears it as well as he. Yet, in its basic meaning it is still a pale word, hardly doing its appointed job in expressing the depth and breadth of our feeling. For, in extending our invitation to him, I told him that to have him with us would make us exceedingly happy and proud - to enjoy the distinction of his presence as well as to give him this further opportunity of feeling again, face to face, the everlasting affection of one of his own classes of Dartmouth men."

In introducing John, Bill spoke most aptly of the common force of fellowship that brought us all together there'that evening; of the pride in belonging to such a group of men; and the transformation of this group into an effective instrument in support of the ideals and undertakings of the College and the liberating arts. In the remainder of Bill's concise and well-chosen words of introduction and tribute, he told John what we know him to be after these ten years of trial and accomplishment as Dartmouth's twelfth president.

This Alumni Fund Issue does not have space for the full quotation of Bill's tribute, but we plan to give it to you next month.

John replied with great warmth of feeling to the tribute which had been paid him and to the mature fellowship so evident in this large gathering of classmates and their wives. He spoke briefly of the trials and doubts which had assailed him at various times during these ten years and of the many times that Hoppy had given him real assistance and encouragement when some of the tasks appeared insurmountable. John also spoke, both amusingly and seriously, of several of the trials and incidents which had come his way during these past ten years.

In conclusion Bill expressed all our thanks to Phil Mayher and Herb Ball for the excellent arrangements and dinner which contributed to making this party such a great success.
