Well, what kind of a month has it been? It was one in which I planned to go to Hanover for the Harvard game. Had a ticket in Section 4 and a lower on the Montrealer. Due to the floods, however, the train didn't leave and as the planes had only standby reservations, saw the game on T.V. Very exciting and finan- cially a success, due to the fact that there were a lot of Harvard graduates watching the game where I was.
Had also planned to have dinner with Treasurer Bill Wilson who has been forwarding the slips with news about many of you on the reverse side, which you have been kind enough to return with your class dues. Bill sends greetings to all the brethren and he "dearly loves those stalwarts who send their dues in promptly. To them an exceedingly large Christmas Greeting. To all others a large greeting which will be properly adjusted on receipt of $5 before Xmas." If you would all pay on first billing the class would benefit by a large postage saving. So let's make Bill's Christmas a happy one and send him a check as soon as you read these lines - unless you have already done so.
Speaking of financial matters, don't forget that Jim Wendell and his Memorial Fund Committee would like to have a Merry Yuletide and need your enthusiastic support. Jim has written, "We don't seem to be getting too much action on the Memorial Fund, but I hope we will before the end of this year."
The New York contingent held a dinner on October 20 at the Dartmouth Club. There was a good turnout and Bill Scherman defined the goals to be set for our various fund raising campaigns. Marly Dwyer spoke about the work he is doing in Westchester as district chairman in interviewing Dartmouth applicants. Nels Krogslund, offered a few choice remarks on the used-car market. Wil Maynard and Bud Yallalee argued the merits of bachelorhood against a team composed of happy benedicts - Bob Smith (father of Nancy, Susan, Elizabeth and Robert Jr.), Dick Gruen (father of Dietrich and Bill), and Bob Kolbe (father of Tom and Harold). George Copp, full of his European travels, told Harry McCann that the food in any Parisian bistro was much better than the Dartmouth Club fare and when the waiter poured ice cream all over Bud Yallalee and Al Jacobson, George concluded that American service is far from bon. Before the dinner, Irv Diamond looked wistfully at a plaque in the bar which includes his name as one of the five players who won the Class C squash racket tournament only a few short years ago. The barristers, Sey Lewis and Hank Werner, sat next to one another discussing weighty legal problems and client deficiencies. The award of the evening went to the aforementioned Bud Yallalee for having covered the most territory and having seen in the course of his travels, Dick Wells in Minneapolis, Bill Adams in Los Angeles and Carl Vickland in Bay Village, Ohio.
I received a newspaper clipping showing the picture of Dick Wells and stating that he had been named sales manager of the St. Louis Park firm of Minnesota Rubber and Gasket Company. This company is the nation's largest producer of rubber O-rings and manufactures other industrial rubber products. Carl Vickland is a district manager of McKesson & Robbins.
The next New York class dinner will be held on January 17, 1956, at the same location, so please put it down on your new calendars. Dick Gruen will send you a reminder after the first of the year and he hopes that as many of you as can leave your hearth and home will be there at 6:00 o'clock for cocktails.
Also for attention of New York Alumni, there was a second luncheon of the Dartmouth Down Town Group. Les Reeves, WaltBlood and Jeff Jackson attended and heard Roger Wilde '21 discuss the Alumni Council (of which august body, Orv Dryfoos and CarlHess are members) and the recent Alumni Fund campaign, of which Mr. Wilde was Chairman.
I have a letter from Alan Hewitt which I shall save for an occasion when I can quote from it at greater length. He writes of having seen Sol Jacob son, another successful theatrical classmate who left Dartmouth early in the second semester of junior year because the call of Jasper Deeter's Hedgerow Theatre, outside of Philadelphia, was so strong. Sol has acted as press agent for Teahouse of the August Moon and is currently heralding Maurice Evans' production of No Time for Sergeants and Guthrie McClintic's A Room Fullof Roses. Sol and his family have been living at New Hope in Bucks County and he commutes to New York. Has two daughters and the older one is at Bennington. If anybody needs tickets to those Broadway plays, perhaps it can be arranged.
Bob Goodman was in New York for several days on business and was able to take in two World Series games. After he returned to Norfolk, he sent me a picture which he had taken at Commencement. He says that he met Hazel and Susie Sulzbacher in North Carolina where both the Goodmans and the Sulzbachers had gone to pick up their children at camp.
Ed Davis sent a clipping from the WorcesterEvening Gazette to the effect that GeorgeMagrath has become superintendent of the Meriden Public Schools. George taught school at Sedgewick, Maine, and at East Hartford, Conn., and served as principal of the Glastonbury High School in Connecticut prior to becoming principal of the Meriden High School. He is married to Miriam Phipps whose father was superintendent of Northbridge Public Schools from 1922 to 1948. George has three sons, Richard, George Jr. and Douglas.
The Hanover Inn registry reveals that On:Dryfoos, Perry Woodbury, John Poole and wife (from Pasadena, Calif.), Jim Prescott and son, Vance Kirby and family, Bill Haist and wife, Frank Lepreau and wife, and ChicCheckering and son were fortunate enough to get reservations at the Inn. Wonder if Chic was there to enter his son in the freshman class. Also a note from Bob Davis stating that he took a swing through Hanover a couple of weekends ago and that his family was most impressed with the "little school."
Bill Hartman was unable to use his tickets to the Yale game because the Bankers Trust Company advised him the Wednesday morning before the game that there was a little matter to be attended to in the Dominican Republic. This is the penalty Bill pays for being vice president in charge of Latin American affairs.
Having been asked to be brief this month because of the Alumni Fund report, just let me add my Christmas Greetings to all of you and your families.
