These notes, which reach the bright light of day almost smack in the middle of the Carnival season, are making their hesitant way into print in bitter competition with the attraction of the drifting snow of a winter storm viewed through a window from a warm, cozy room. The scene is strangely reminiscent of a '34 Carnival, especially the viewing from a warm room part, as ye sec was blessed with roommates and friends who shunned the great outdoors as the plague, so that Carnival guests were carefully screened for their interest in the art works of Carpenter, the rare books in Baker Library, and studies of the chemical reactions of certain carbohydrates on the human bloodstream.
The years have not lent great change in fact none. Recently the mercenaries of Holy Cross ran concentric circles of varying degrees around the minions of Doggie Julian, said minions having obviously been hastily summoned, bleary-eyed, from the stacks of the above-mentioned Baker, and we made the mistake of venturing northward. In brief, it can be reported that the laboratory facilities of the Inn are excellent, but Hanover thermometers have been adjusted so that five degrees below zero is much colder than it used to be and in building the Hopkins Center they have evidently pushed the Gym much further down East Wheelock Street.
But the franchise is limited for this kind of stuff and we have many several communications which ought to keep us from scratching too hard to get to where the 1935 guy starts off, for instance." From HERE comes now.... Sid Wisch to charge, if not fraud, malfeasance, or misfeasance against barrister Al Levenson, at least misquote, "Only stopped in Hawaii to refuel on my way to Japan - and that was at 4 A.M. Actually our firm imports some items from Japan and Hong Kong so I went over to 'get acquainted.' And ran into Jim Darling having breakfast at the Imperial in Tokyo. Hadn't seen him since '34. Writing this from home while recovering from a minor heart attack (not caused by Geisha girls) — so I've got time on my hands." .. . and from General Foods comes the release, "Jim Darling will become Director of Marketing for the International Division effective December 1, 1961. Jim is well qualified for his assignment. He joined General Foods in 1952 and served in various product management capacities before becoming Advertising and Merchandising Manager of the Jell-O Division. Early in 1961 he was appointed to the position of Marketing Counsellor. In July he went to Japan on assignment for the International Division and returned on October 31. Jim is a graduate of Dartmouth College and attended the Harvard Advanced Management Program in 1959." . . . and another traveler Bernie Cushman says, "Dorothy and I had our first European trip this fall. We visited London, Paris, Frankfort, Venice, Florence, and Rome and enjoyed it all." . . . then in the line of duty, StewAnderson, "Have been transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Rio de Janeiro as First Secretary and expect to remain here for the next few years. This is our second assignment to Rio, having been here from 1947-49." . . . and Art Grimes by the time this hits print will have, as Doris says, "Left Sydney to wend our way to New York the slightly longer way - via Bangkok, India, Nairobi in Kenya, N.E. Africa, then on to Europe and New York about Jan. 20."
And THERE. . . . George Collins reports, medically and otherwise, "G. Washington Hospital slit me from stem to stern expecting some sea urchin to jump out. But all they found was a little hole in the diaphragm with a couple of Martinis (piece of fat) sticking through! So they sewed me up and said 'switch to Manhattans.' One month later I'm all healed up, recharged and as good as new and the Boss says, 'as of the first of the year you are in charge of Latin American Development (Ernst and Ernst) - pack your bags.'" Dr. Al Yankauer is now in Washington with the World Health Organization ... and Paul Fitzpatrick is directing motion pictures for Westwood Artists in New York City.
Then NAMES IN THE NEWS, this month. ... Armand A. Benoit has been appointed assistant to the vice president for manufacturing at Pitney-Bowes, Inc. He will serve in a liaison capacity between the Stamford manufacturing facilities of the postage meter and business machines firm and the company's British and German subsidiaries.... John Bathrick is one of three members of an advisory council for the Noroton (Conn.) Water Company.... Stan Smoyer, legal counsel and secretary for Johnson and Johnson (and, of course, class chairman), as a former Eagle Scout speaks at the Middlesex Council (N. J.) Eagle Recognition Day in honor of 26 boys in the area who won the Eagle Award, Scouting's highest award. . .. Nick Xanthaky's wife, Alice, from the Manchester (N. H.) Union flashes her as always attractive smile, but from the back of a camel in the shadow of the famed Giza pyramids outside Cairo, Egypt. . . and Dr.Frank Lepreau, on returning from Africa and his work in a Friends' medical mission, was recipient of the Fall River (Mass.) Lodge of B'Nai B'rith Man of the Year award. Quoting in part: "We honor Dr. Lepreau because of his outstanding contributions to a better way of life in our community and because of his civic and charitable endeavors in behalf of all creeds and groups.''
Last month we thought that we might get into the activities of the next '34 generation a little more deeply, but that was one of our less inspired thoughts, geometrical progression being what Prof. Bancroft Brown used to say it was, but you might be interested to know that Ted Germann and Bill Ramsey have daughters at Vassar. . . . Bob Ford has sons at Franklin and Marshall and Tufts. . . . Prof. Ed Brown has a son at Princeton and a daughter from Wellesley a graduate student at Brown. . . . Dr. DickLoughry has a daughter at the U. of Ari- zona. . . . Ray Snow has a daughter at U. of New Hampshire. . . . Dave Hedges' boy, Dave Jr. went to Stanford. . . . Laurie Herman has a boy and girl at Michigan.... StewAnderson has a boy at N.E. College, Henniker, N. H., and a girl at Goucher College in Baltimore . . . and Bill Ely has a girl at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa. . . . all doing well and achieving things well beyond the poor limits of space herein.
And then you get clippings from the newspapers of beautiful young girls with handsome elderly gentlemen as the young ladies are presented to society like Bob U. Brown,Dick Loughry, Hank Werner, Orv Dryfoos,Dave Callaway, and fortunately space runs out before you have to distinguish between the handsome and the elderly.
