Dartmouth's varsity track team under Coach Ellie Noyes opened the winter track season January 15 against top-ranked Cornell at Ithaca, N. Y. The Big Red, Heptagonal cross-country champions, were, as expected, too much for the Indians and wonwon 64½ to 44½. However, Dartmouth did better than was generally expected and Coach Ellie Noyes termed himself "well pleased" with the Big Green's initial performance.
Dartmouth did well in the middle-distance and distance events as well as in some of the field events. Sandy Heath ran strongly in the 600-yard race to finish a close third, while Paul Merriken, despite a cramp, finished second in the mile race behind John Rosenbaum, Cornell's Heptagonal champion, who set a meet record of 4:26. Merriken and Pete Jebsen also did well in the mile and two-mile relay events although Cornell swept both.
Sophomore Willy Einarsson, a native of Iceland, was Dartmouth's top performer. Einarsson took a first place tie in the high jump, finished second in the broad jump and third in the shot put in his first varsity appearance. Dartmouth's pole vaulter Lou Metzger set a meet record, soaring 13 feet to win, while Bill Springer tied for second place with a leap of 121/2 feet. Captain John Harlor took a first in the broad jump with a leap of 22' 7", while veteran George Bixby took a first in the shot put and third in the 35-pound weight throw to round out the Dartmouth scoring.
