Work on the installation of the new artificial ice system at the Davis Rink is progressing satisfactorily. The rink surface has been moved nearer the west entrance, additional seating installed at the East end, and more than nine miles of pipe laid. The pipe will be covered with a layer of sand which will be frozen by the brine flowing through the pipes. A layer of water will be sprayed on top of the frozen sand and the ice will be ready for November practice sessions. At long last....
¶ The basketball season gets off to an early start at Dartmouth this year. On October 20, the Boston Celtics and Phila delphia Warriors tangle on the Alumni Gymnasium court in an exhibition game to benefit the Lebanon Lions Club.
¶ The Dartmouth coaches spent the summer in a variety of ways. Tuss McLaughry and Tom Dent took care of gardens and fixed their homes in Norwich. Backfield coach Milt Piepul ran the local playground, while head trainer Tony Dougal and Sid Hazelton conducted swimming classes at Storrs Pond. End coach Elmer Lampe and wife led a bicycle tour, while John Dell Isola did construction work. Red Hoehn was on tour most of the summer with his two sons who performed very well in a number of junior tennis tournaments. Swimming coach Karl Michael taught swimming at a summer resort.
¶ Davis Field House charms will be awarded, beginning this year, to all winners of three varsity D letters provided two of these were acquired in major sports. Davis Field House charms were awarded on the same basis some years back but the custom had been discontinued. They are provided through the generosity of Howard Clark Davis '06, the donor of the Davis Field House and Davis Rink.
¶ A new athletic award has been established at Dartmouth in memory of the late Alfred E. Watson '83. The Alfred E. Watson Trophy will be awarded annually to a Dartmouth senior who, in the opinion of the varsity coaches, has been the outstanding athlete during the year. A miniature trophy will be presented to the student selected, while the permanent trophy with the winners' names engraved will remain in the Trophy Room at the gymnasium.
